Which would be a better way to fix a snowblower bucket, stick or flux core welding? There is a section on the bottom that's curled back and doesn't look like it will straighten out. I am thinking about cutting out the bad section and welding a new piece back in. It's heavy gage sheet metal. I have a stick welder, the wire feed I would have to borrow.
Reply:Thickness of the steel you wanna weld on? Equipment you have on hand,? YOUR welding abilities for the project at hand? Finally, how about some pics here to show us the part to weld that you're talking about? There's several experts here that have a ton of knowledge on that stuff but you gotta help them out with a tad bit more info. Reply:Sounds like the "shoes" on the side of the blower are missing or misadjusted allowing the base to drag. Most blowers have a "wear" strip on the bottom that is replaceable. You might think about this when doing the repair to save yourself the hassle of doing this again in the future. As far as machine. I agree a lot depends on your skill and thickness of the material. My 1st choice would be mig because it's probably fairly thin. That and I'm simply a better mig welder than I am with stick. I could certainly make it work with stick, but I'd need to practice a bit with some scrap material to dial both me and the machine in. With stick I wouldn't go any larger than 3/32" rods and if the material is thin, I might even go buy smaller rods. My 1st choice would either be 7018 or 7014 if I had to do stick, mostly because those are the rods I run best, and the ones I usually have on hand. You will probably also find the sides of the blower have worn down if you have the floor rolled back. Picts would help tell this. I'd plan on installing or replacing the side shoes if need be as well.Moonrise did apost on a rebuild and hardfacing he did on his snow blower a few years back.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=37323Last edited by DSW; 12-29-2012 at 11:37 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
