Existing structure that needs some columns removed to make for a more open space.4 W8x31 columns (basement to roof 3 floors) need to be removed from the second floor. To do this I will be transferring the load to some new beams.6 of these beams are W24x176 one is a W30x235, all about 45' long. That is 7920#'s  just for one beam. They load in on the second floor about 24' off the road below. They will pass through small windows removed at the bottom of floor 2 to get into the building.8 new columns will be added basement to bottom of floor 3 (bottom of new beams) 16 existing beams will be cut, and a section removed to allow the new beams to be placed as high as they can. These 16 beams support the slab of the 3rd floor. That space has a operating store in it that will not be closing during the renovation of the space below. The total load on the 2nd floor after all the equipment, steel and men are sitting on it will be 125,000#'sShould be fun. Attached Images

Reply:So basically you're widening the stance on the 2nd floor to open up the middle?  More verticle beams closer to the outer edges and support the 3rd floor with horizontal beams? Trying to get my mind around the whole thing. Reply:Originally Posted by Fat BastardI got hear just after you graduated ...+ a decade or two. lol I wish it was after breakup I hate winter lifts.Must be turned over to the mall on May 1st so the new tenants can start the install of their case work. The big beams arrive from the east coast March 9th and they go in on March 22. This is in such a hurry I have 90,000#'s of steel purchased before I have a contract or final structural permit. The column in the photo will get a beam on each side tucked into the beams in the floor above. Also re. the picture it shows three beams intersecting at the column.  That column starts in the basement and continues to the roof, the new beams will run north south(left right ) in the photo, the beam that comes in from the direction of the camera (camera is looking west) and all the others running east west will be interrupted by the new beams. When people with big (big) money ask I guess we all kinda jump.Ill ask around and see if I can post some of the drawings.
Reply:let us know how it goes....If you survive after the roof caves in on ya.. Just kidding, it sounds like ya know what your doing...hopefully somebody does....

That may be what nice guys do, but it's not what smart guys do.Lock these people into some manner of contract to cover your butt--it can be just a simple preliminary, that's separate and becomes attachment to the 'BIG CONTRACT' that's written, once all the little unknowns are sorted out. Win, loose or draw--they own that steel, etc. A decent deposit is wholly in order. If they're in too big a hurry to take 5 min's.---they will be problem people. Some big money people get a perverse pleasure from jacking around the rest of us 'SMALL' people. I've been thru all kinds of deals with 'big money', getting jacked around on MY MONEY. They always found time to get in a big hurry--to pay me--once they realized that this little piss ant was going to lien city in several days; or already had.

Reply:I have Googled 5th Ave Mall, and found the changes in scenery to be mind bogeling, when compared to my memories from the fifties.  The nieghborhood has changed, big time.As I recall, that was Wolf's Department Store. It looks like next weeks temperatures will be above freezing for your lifts.Last edited by nadogail; 03-17-2011 at 04:56 PM.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:FB thanks for posting the prints for your job. I teach a blueprint reading class for welders at the local community college. Our welding course is aimed at teaching the students how to pass the UA21 and UA41 test. Since most of our graduates become pipe welders the sample prints that I use are mainly from the pipe industry but the prints that you posted are a good example of other kinds of work available.

Reply:Here is a wrinkle that I don't think I included. The four columns that are being removed, need to be split and jacked up 5/8".I we cut all the columns in half after installing splice plates with slotted holes and are going to jack the 3rd floor and roof up 5/8" tomorrow.See attached drawing. Reply:man that looks like fun!....I would have loved to have been there....
Reply:Shots of the column stretching operation. pic 1-2 is the jacking pads installed. pic 3 is the jacks installed and the column cut in two. Remember that column is supporting the 3rd floor and the roof including snow load. Oh and the mall was open at the time so customers were in the store on the 3rd floor. When we got to about 3/8" lift the jacking got hard then the slab above snapped and the jacking got a lot easier  lol.  pic 4 is the column lifted 5/8" pic 5 is 3 more columns to go.And no that aint me way too skinny. Reply:So the beams go up 5/8ths", insert new beams and drop it a little? Do they expect it will all come down to the original height?"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:So here is the latest. We finished a week early. Thanks in large part to the workers from Local 751 Ironworker's.First pic shows the prep of the existing beams to allow for the new beams to slot into place.Last shows the beam being pushed into place. (they are out of order of progression sorry)I will get a photo this week of the finished room. Attached Images
Reply:Man, that is some serious stuff. Looks like a very interesting job.
Reply:heavy man, like way heavy!  I was a framing contractor back in the early 90's, residential only, and I hold a awning and canopy license now. I have done some pretty heavy r&r and lift and place stuff., but nothing even comparing to that. Hats off to you. Awesome job, working in the cold sucks IMHO.Mike
Reply:The cold wasn't a big deal but we had wind storms (100+ mph) all around the time of the lift into the space. Lucked out and they died down for that night.
