I've been busy with home projects recently, but I finally got to go back out into the shop last night.  I don't consider myself that skilled with the welder, but I am making progress on my technique. This is a home made oil catch can for a drag car.  My friend machined the drain fitting and the top is cut from one solid piece.  I still need to weld the top on tonight.Chuck Norris was born in a log cabin that he built with his own bare hands.
Reply:nice bro..what car is it for?
Reply:it's for a tube frontend camaro with a big block in it.  Not really my thing but I'm just welding it up for a buddy.  I'm not a big fan of round catch cans, they don't seem to fit into the engine compartment all that well.  When I make one for my wrx it will be square or triangular to conserve space in the engine compartment.Chuck Norris was born in a log cabin that he built with his own bare hands.
Reply:The lid looks bigger than the can, if the fit were better, I think it would have come out better overall.
Reply:I see what looks like a lot of black spots and contamination issues with the bung in the top. Looks like you could have done a much better job cleaning the alum 1st. With the amount of dirt / oil / cra@p I see on the top, I'd have scrubbed that down 1st with acetone and a scruggie pad before brushing it and hitting it again with acetone. That or if it was really dirty, then sanding it after the initial scrubing, and then scrubbing it with acetone again before the wire bursh stage. I see a lot of cr@p on the alum even where you brushed it.Your consistancy could also use some work from what I see of your welds..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Nice can.
Reply:yeah the fit up was less than ideal, but I didn't fabricate the parts on this one.  My friend did and kind of half assed it.  When I make something for myself or a paying customer I put a lot more time into the preparation.  I didn't notice any oil on the parts but I will readily admit that I touched the tungsten a couple of times, and had to stop and regrind.  Consistancy is pretty tough for me but I am a novice and I'm trying to learn and practice as much as possible.  I will try using acetone beforehand on some welds and see if it improves my results.  Also I'll upload the finished photos later, I'm considerably happier with the welds I did today.Chuck Norris was born in a log cabin that he built with his own bare hands.

Reply:Throw that POS in the trash !  Refering to the PBR. Nice work on your oil catch canthough.
Reply:nothing wrong with pbr, it cheap and good.  I love it, un-ironicly.Chuck Norris was born in a log cabin that he built with his own bare hands.
Reply:What is the thread pitch on that fitting next to the elbow fitting?
Reply:it's not threaded, just a slip on hose.  Normally he puts AN fittings on, but this can is a freebee for a co-worker.Chuck Norris was born in a log cabin that he built with his own bare hands.
Reply:So the lid is a CNC part?
Reply:not exactly, it was cut on a mill, but it was done manually.  were just poor guys that like fast cars, tools and making stuff ourselves.Chuck Norris was born in a log cabin that he built with his own bare hands.
