Ok, this not quite a welding question, but I figured if anyone would know this would be the place to ask.I bought the little woman a Soda Stream maker for Christmas and it uses CO 2 for carbonation . Is welding CO 2 the same? If so I'm looking into refilling the small cylinder that it came with rather then spending the big bucks at Wally World. If anyone has done this I would sure like your input into this. Thanks a lot in advance,Happy New Year.Welder99.
Reply:Maybe more knowledgeable folks will chime in, but the CO2 is a liquid and it might be dangerous trying to fill the little one as the liquid is waay below zero when it goes to atmospheric pressure.                              MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:There are two types of CO2 cylinders, those that withdraw gas, and those that withdraw liquid CO2. The valves are different. It is possible to refill cylinders with CO2. It's done all the time for paintball, air rifles and so on. You just need the correct cylinders and transfill equipment. I can't comment on which type the carbonator uses. Maybe one of the home brew guys knows, or if you post up picts of how the cylinder is marked we can figure it out. My guess is this is easily doable once you know what you have..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Welder 99,CO2 is CO2. Beverage grade carbon dioxide comes from the same source as industrial CO2, same bulk liquid tanks, same everything. I have a soda stream at my house and transfill from a CO2 siphon cylinder. The siphon tube allows you to draw liquid CO2 instead of gas. If you have access to a siphon tank and can locate the fittings, it's an easy process and you can get the job done in less than five minutes. LWS are not supposed to fill Soda Stream cylinders b/c the the cylinders remain property of Soda Stream after you purchase their system.  The catch is they charge you around 15-18 bucks for a refill of around 16 ounces (1 pound). That price is a complete ripoff. To put it in perspective, industrial shops purchase 50 pounds of CO2 from LWS compaines for about the same price as Soda Stream is charging for 1 pound of their product. If you need help locating the fittings let me know. Jack

Reply:Soda stream CO2 is a racket, 29 bucks for a pound, I pay 12 bucks for 20 pounds. Same thing, just need to make up an adapter hose.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Using beverage CO2 is really common here in Europe. They usually call it pub gasNickESAB CaddyTig 2200iPowermax 45MM140 (Sold)

Reply:If you can find the fittings to fit both bottles, you just need some teflon stainless braided line to hook the 2 together and you can refill them yourself.  And, you dont need a siphon type tank, just turn your source tank upside down.  We used small 10 oz co2 bottles in drag cars to run the shifters and throttle stops.  Use to refill them all the time from 20 lb bottles.
Reply:you don't necessarily need a siphon tube tank you can invert a regular co2 tank and it works also (probably not the safest method though) you will just need an adaptor either way and a scale would be handy to tell you when its full
Reply:Also, remember to chill your Soda Stream cylinder in fridge or freezer...allows you to get more liquid CO2 in there. Definitely use a scale
Reply:That may be a bad idea, since when it warms it my overpressure and blow the burst disk. . .I had this happen years ago with a small PB bottle, and it was *NOT* fun. . . - Tim
Reply:Did you fill the PB bottle according to the tare weight? CO2 vessels are generally filled by product weight not pressure.
Reply:I prefer my redneck version of 'soda stream'.  I adapted a schrader tire valve to the cap for a 2-liter bottle.  I have a pressure regulator (not flow regulator) that fits my CO2 bottle.  A flowmeter regulator may work ok if it puts out correct pressure.Fill the 2-liter bottle with your choice of water, juice, or whatever.  Chill it in the refrigerator overnight.  Pressurize the bottle (40 or 50 psi is plenty).  Shake the bottle to create little bubbles and lots of surface area for the CO2 to get absorbed.  Keep shaking as long as CO2 is being absorbed.  You can listen to the regulator, or turn the bottle sideways and watch for CO2 bubbling in.  Maybe 30 seconds of shake at 50 psi should get you a good fizz.  Naturally the shaking only works if the liquid is cold.  We all know what shaking hot carbonated liquids does. Reply:Man, that is a lot of time, trouble and expense to go throught just for a fizzy drink!!!  I prefer to go to the grocery store for a 2L soda.  'Jus sayin'
Reply:I want to Thank All who responded,I will take all the information at hand and put together a recharging system.I figured there was no difference in the CO 2, but it never hurts to ask.I think our Politicians should visit this site, they might get an education...lol. Happy Welding.Welder99
