I'm slowly building up my shop and would like to install security bars on the windows and beef up the doors. Just wondering if anyone has some pics of cool designs?Cheers
Reply:Weak point in most of these systems is the attachment points to the walls. Most doors fail because the doors don't break ( assuming steel not wood doors), it's because the frames shatter or they pull out of the wood studs. Look at the steel buck door frames they use for block and make sure they are tied in to solid material well. The average king and jack studs usually won't cut it. Residential steel doors themselves are fairly break in resistant ( doors, not the frames), but heavier steel commercial doors are better.Same applies to window bars and "security" doors. We used to take security doors off with a 6' digging bar if we were ripping out the whole prehung door frame. Most times they were only held on be small screws and 90% of the time they simply went into the brick molding. Just jam the bar in thru the rails and pry. Either the screws gave or the brick mold came off.Concrete walls would be your best route, grouted block #2. Hollow block is a distant 3rd. ( a 4 lb mallet and less than 10 minutes and I can make an access hole in hollow block no problem.) Wood studs is even farther down the line, though the plywood sheathing is a bit tougher to bust thru if you don't have cordless tools..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks for all the good tips. My plan is to build solid steel frames for both the windows and doors and secure them really well. Just haven't decided on how I want them to look. I would like to put some style in to them. I've seen guys make them look like spider webs some like landscapes. Just want to have something different then the standard jail cell look.
Reply:Not quite "security" bars but it might give you some ideas.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=19763Niel has done a bunch of stuff like this he's posted up in the past. Reply:for window guards on industrial and commercial buildings I always prefer to through bolt to the inside and weld the outer bolt heads. The guards on my building are made from woven wire manganese crusher screenLast edited by Dualie; 12-25-2012 at 12:14 AM.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:if its for your shop i would recommend security over looks you can't beat some 50mm x 10mm flat bar and some 20mm thick round bar
Reply:I'd suggest 1/2" lexan for windows instead of bars.
Reply:around here they figured out they could drill through the lexan rather easily and use a toggle setup tp yank it right out.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I dont really have anything to add to what has already been said all good ideas!! One thing to consider is maybe round pipe or solid round and make it so it spins in its designed area so it can not be cut with a hacksaw or sawzall because it will not stay still to cut..and yet lg enough diameter a bolt cutter will not fit..Miller 250DX HTP 221 DV AC/DCHenrob O-A Miller 180 MigMiller 150 Inverter   Hobart 10,000 Welder-Generator   Have a good day!!!

Reply:i use rebar because it's inexpensive. i build them with rebar and angle iron from the scrap yard. i usually lag the hole bar assembly in from the inside and tack weld over the bolts so they cant back them out. unfortunately no matter what you do, if someone really wants it, there gonna get it...also buy a pitbull and buy a 12 gauge, hang a sign in the window that says "you loot, i shoot".
Reply:Some great ideas there , just a note . When your doors and windows are well secured the next easiest access is the roof , a cordless drill , a sheet off and your in . Its also very quiet compared to cutting bars .Fabric mesh F72 or similar fixed to roofing members are something to think of.BrettA good guess is better than a bad measurement
