Just looking for some input on trailer sides for my 5x10 so that way I dont gotta worry about stuff bouncing out. I have a bunch of top rail laying around for a fence job I did. Thought about just using it to extend the height for support and then 3/4 treated plywood about 2ft tall. Also thought about cutting off all the angle iron and redoing the whole side supports with the rail just so it looks uniform. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks. Reply:I think you'd be better off just tying things down so they don't bounce out...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:It'd be nice to have some sort of removable extension frame/panels that bolt on.  That way if you wanted to go back the original configuration (or something else) it'd be easy to do.  Also, truck bed liner (the DIY stuff in the gallon cans) makes a good trailer deck board paint.
Reply:I wouldn't suggest cutting the original angle sides off. That forms a truss thats the major support for those sorts of  trailers. We added some brackets to ours so we could add some removeable 3/4" plywood sides. We have some 2 1/2" angle in the corners to support the plywood in the front, anda verticle brace where we have to seam the plywood on the sides as well as a support at the rear. AT 2' tall the original frame is strong enough to support the pry, the added parts only help keep it in position. It's nice to be able to remove the sides since it makes it easier to strap down loads that are not loose material that way.  For construction debris, dirt, stone etc we use the sides. For equipment, lumber etc, we remove them. Makes it easier to clean the floor without all the tie down points in the way when shoveling or sweeping..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:why not make some reciever s to weld to the existing uprights, then make some rectangular panels, lined with hardware cloth, which drop into the recievers. You could line the existing sides with plywood or hardware cloth also. If you want to save weight and gas this might be a good bet.Mike
Reply:Why not do some stake pockets and make removable sides like we did on this trailer. Attached Images
Reply:Looks like a pretty light trailer to do a whole lot with. Add some extension risers on the front and sides to get your 2 foot then bolt the heck out of some 1/2 inch or 5/8ths plywood is about as far as I'd go. I'd try not to weaken the top rail stiffners any unless you're willing to dive into beefing the frame and the whole bit."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Here is what I did on my 5x10 back in 2003.  It has held up well to a lot of abuse over the past 8 years.I picked up 4x10 sheets of plywood (wanted to avoid any seams) built the top rail cap out of 2x4 pressure treated lumber and coated the whole thing down with some heavy duty marine grade weather sealer.  I put on a couple of coats when I first did it, but I haven't touched it up or recoated it since.  It obviously is due to be sanded down and recoated.  Aluminum box on the front.  The canoes are just sitting up there.  I need to make removable load bars across the trailer so they can be secured for transport.
Reply:I have almost the same trailer. Here is what I did:You can read the post at http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=33019.The only thing I would mention is that my trailer is not as well-balanced now as it was before. It is much better for carrying tall things - refrigerator, cabinets, etc. and better for mulch. The sides make it easy to tie things in.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
