Hey yall!!Well, My latest project is turning an old high milage s10 into a scrap/utility trailer... When I took it apart, I was kind of dissapointed in the original welds:And decided that I could probabally do better. I'm a first year welding student at the local vocational school, and so far we've learned a lot about stick and o/a in all positions, but not so much about mig. I cut up some 1/8 sheet at school the other day and ran some beads with a miller 252, and then came home and got to work. I used my Hobart 187 with the voltage tap on 5, and wfs on 50. I would have liked to go a little hotter, but when I tried running 6/50, I burned right through. So, heres what I've done:And I'm looking for any advice, feedback, or constructive criticim I can get... Thanks everyone, more on this project soon [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:Looks good man... did you do any grind or bevel the original welds at all?
Reply:Thanks guys!! This is my first time using my mig on anything critical, and I was nervous about it. It ran like a dream, except for where I burned through and had to fix, and one strangely-shaped joint about halfway back. I started welding it and got major porosity, so I ground out my mig weld and tried to re-weld it with my stickmate (3/32 7018). It ran way better, but still has holes in it!! The same joint on the opposite frame rail welded just fine with the mig, first attempt. Must be one of those things. And Kustomizingkid, I sandblasted most of the junk off of it, and then used a wire wheel on my angle grinder, and wiped it down with a rag and some acetone. I left the original welds alone.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:I mean, the new weld looks fine and all, I just dont see what was wrong with it in the first place...There was nothing wrong with the factory weld to begin with, by automotive standards that one looks damn good.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Good practice and it might help sell the trailer. They go quick where I live, because people don't want to trash their SUVs.Don't forget safety chains, which are cheap as kits from hardware stores. I don't wire the ones I sell, since specific kits are available that fit the towing vehicle and I don't want to hassle with owner electrical systems due to liability.

Reply:also I didnt see anything about it so if I missed this part in your posting im sorry. did you weld over the existing weld?
Reply:What was it about the original weld that you did not like? They look better than some I've run into. Believe it or not, this first one was a 2 inch receiver bracket under a full-sized pickup. The second was only a trailer bumper. Attached ImagesLast edited by tanglediver; 04-27-2011 at 11:18 PM.City of L.A. Reply:tangle driver I see nothing more than the paint wearing off.
Reply:Abosulutely nothing wrong with making things better than they were. If you have the desire and time, go for it. You're welding looks dern good. The only caution is to think seriously before making long continuous beads on some pieces and configurations. Not that you did, just in case you get the urge. There are times you can take something you've worked real hard on and turn it into bowed garbage all for the ease of starting at one end and quitting at the other. Looks good so far. Good extra effort on the pre-cleaning. I've never heard of a case where cleaning made things worse."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:My two cents on the frame weld, don't work on older car frames if that weld bothered you.  You'd be amazed at what kind of factory welds are still holding car frames together.  Granted this is a trailer but if this was for someones vehicle, say for a restoration or customization project, I wonder how much the frame is warped now. We got guys that come in to work that think they know it all, you try to teach them the right way, but there way is better.  "You gotta weld this first."  "You can't make these welds so big."  "You gotta make these welds bigger" As soon as you turn your back they are doing it however they feel it should be done, mostly the fastest way possible so they can get back to playing on their cell phone, and then they warp $3000 worth of cabs for tractors and payloaders worth over 200K.Your welds look good though.
