I entered a guitar building contest a month ago, and got a month left to finish it.   I won't win... my design is far from mainstream It can be played like a lap steel, or held normally and played like a bottleneck/slide guitar.   Body Scale a 85% of standard and I use a 22.5" fret scale which is very short... and faster for indexing when playing slide.   We'll see? The good news is I bought a nice Delta cast frame bandsaw (1991 made in USA) and 3 real nice storage cabinets for all the new goodies... Also, Rockler thinks I'm swell with all the router bits and doo dads I  want$$$Some pics Attached ImagesLast edited by PapaLion; 04-04-2011 at 11:40 AM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:Sweet! I have played for years and always wanted to build my own guitar. Keep us posted.Moose13
Reply:Keep us posted on the build. That shovel guitar is built on what I've always known as a "maize" scoop. "Maize" being West Texas slang for milo.
Reply:Darth not be critical but U will maybe  have better luck using your fingers... playing by licking guitars is an advanced technique by fellas like HendrixOld Timer,  I R a-maized. I cannot seem to keep from doing that.  Please overlook My-lo ways.   Don't mess with Texas  I played a shovel like that once off the horns of an onry Buck Goat I had, Mostly a ringing kinda thing. He was sent to ~Goat Heaven~... or BBQ4Me as we call it. I have built quite a few and parts assembled a lot more...that is a  good way to start. It is an addiction. forewarned   Just like welding, practice, praxtice and ... practice. Plan to throw away a few as U go.  I finally found a use for the Elk Antlers... shot it in '77 near Mormon Lake 5B, close to Flagstaff. The best Elk in the West maybe???   He was a heavy 6 pointer and I drug the antlers around for years. Finally last year I hacked it up and plan on making some grips and  handles fo files etc...As usual I don't know the names of these two but the are US made and they work great. I've had them awhile, wooden handles give out so now they're more better   These are snapshots of working the neck last week. The wood is called Swamp Ash, I think it comes from Oregon somewhere, Very low density and lots of grain and sands and routes well. I'm ready to put the first layer of sanding sealer and white clay emulsion on tomorrow.  Today I sanded 150, then 220, stain with a pecan wash to highlight grain ... final sand with 320.   Use Canadian Garnet paper it's great. The Chinese stuff is terrible, produces an irregular finish, bad glue and can stain the wood.  Step two is  annaline stain with clear sealer for color and finally Laquer and polish it.   Takes a week or more to do it. Reply:That's a great looking build, I would be interested in seeing the progress. Give some shots of the pick up and tuners when they get installed.Gordhttp://gordsgarage.wordpress.com/
Reply:Here's the weird part,  Ok, so I'm better known on this forum ok... for better or worse?  But here there is some interest, there I'm just another Joe building among many.  Oh, well, I appreciate the interest and sure any details  can get some pics etc.   I'm thinking to possibly even produce some of these things, First we'll see if they play like my idea says they will. Hopefully you can tune it to a chord... like Open G for example, and hand to a person who has never played, show them the  places to stop  the slide and let 'em go.  Those positions have dots on ther neck so it should be easy.  I have spent some time with 3rd graders once and a lap steel and they were able to play it within 30 minutes.    Most steels you cannot play notes with your fingers on the  the frets... I'm going to set this thing up closer so you can.  LeRoy Parnell, Bonnie Raitt,  Leon from  Bob Wills band,  Slack Key  Hawaiian music,  Dobro like Jerry Douglas... all could be done with this thing.  So we'll see. Here's an example    I know Arlon Roth from the Music biz. He is a real keen guy.  I've  never met Leroy but I'd like to, note he plays slide but he also uses fingers to fret chords.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVUh6dsHt-o[/ame]Last edited by PapaLion; 04-05-2011 at 10:50 AM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:My wife brought home a little Squier mini strat a couple of weeks ago from a garage sale & what got my attention was the fact that it has at least an AA grade flame maple neck. I imagine that is very rare for such a cheap guitar. Anyway, i've dis-assembled it & i'm going to re-paint it & put good hardware & pups on it. With such a short scale, it should be good for my 11 year old daughter to learn on & i'll probably have a blast with it too.

Reply:I'm not sure of the scale of a mini-Strat?  Measure from the nut to the saddles. Very well could be a  22.5" also?   The old DuoSonics were 22.5's.  The internet has numerous tunings,  ~ DGDgbd ~is very common, sounds good.  You can use any socket from your toolbox that fits her finger.  The dots  are your reference points.   YouTube has Bonnie Raitt videos... and off she goes into a lifetime of fun.  A few pics of my 1953 Fender Lap Steel and my  "snakehead"  takeoff.I like the old blond finish. I put the base coat on yesterday, Sanding sealer with White clay pigment,  A thin pecan stain goes first to bring up the grain, sand that to taste,  then the sealer.  Next is an analine tinted clear sealer/lacquer mix for color and finally clear lacquer to seal it.   New guitars are done with a thick coat of Poly. older ones are often lacquer, thin, and eggshell hard.  Lowes has Deft which works well.  Gary is one of the best... "Dust My broom" has nuthin ta do with sweeping upSo generous of you  FelonyAss to take that old Tele off my hands...  You're welcome to  talk to my grandkids who will eventually get the old Teles. Reply:Well the guitar is assembled and playing.  Next is to do a few days of dial in on string choices and  nut heights etc.  That is easy for me. Once I had buffed out the body and had the control plate assy done, tuners on etc... it was less than 2 hours from installing the pickup to playing it.    A few pics of the last steps.   Hard to get the color right in the living room, It is a warm lemon yellow and the wood grain can be seen some under the finish. Pickguard is Bakelite as are the dots.  The materials are as used by Fender in the early 50's.Krueger was my Grandads name on Mom's side and "Steeler" is my choice for the name.  It can be played as a lap steel or played bottleneck.  There are three tones.  Front position is  bassy using a RC circuit to let mostly bass thru, Middle position is volume with a quick tone... 1/4 turn takes it from bright to deep, Ez to do on the fly.  The back positon is  wide open no tone just twang.   I  varied the circuit with different cap/resitor RC choices, kind of like  sighting in a rifle,Now to practice awhile, drives my wife batty, slide ain't her thing, she likesthe Martin unplugged. Reply:Looks good! A little too basic(the top part especially) to win a contest i think but i dont really know 5%^# about guitars any way.
Reply:Hat's off. That's a real pretty guitar you've built. The fret board quilting is beautiful. Congrats!Planning, at some point, to build a cigar box guitar and/or a can-jo. Cigar Box Nation seems like the go to site for CBG info. I just love the sound and look of them. Real works of art. How did you do the head stock label? Reply:Sear, yes i agree.. I'd call this prototype one and I already see ways to build it simpler and prettier.  The snakehead headstock is early Fender and so I used it for the history and the vintage idea.   Very few people know guitars really, but they know what they likeHi Bert,   thanks for the kind words.  Cigar box is a big hit and a lot of fun, good place to begin. go for itThere is a friend who does the logos.  It is lacquer layer on a special paper with starch rolled onto it, then you silkscreen the art layers, then add another layer of lacquer and U get an envelope.  Warm water dissolves the starch and U float it off onto the guitar.  Works just like the ones U had as a kid for models.  I can send U a contact if u wish,  pm me.I got a ?  I bought a Delta Shaper (USA made 43 series) recently (just like the one in this pic).  and it uses 1/2" shank shaper cutters made of carbide steel.  You can get a lot of shapes of course to do woodworking.   I need to modify or build a shaper blade that will cut an  1/2 oval pattern  about 1 1/4" deep and 7/8" high.  I was quoted $1100 for the first one CNC. Hmm too much $ of course.  There were no CNC machines in '57 so obviously Fender did it some other way?   It would not have to be carbide I suppose.  This would be used to shape the rear of the neck pic enclosed.  there are 4-5 shapes I'df like to have.   Ideas?  make it , buy it hmmm ???Note the strong OSHA standards observed in 1957 in Fullerton.  I will make a fixture and hold that neck with  handles.  I will wear eye and hearing protectors. But I don't got a clue how to get the correct oval shaoped carbide shaper cutter.  Hmm maybe if I had more tools? Reply:If it's like the one in the second picture I'm sure I've seen some made by Freud for a lot less. They are for making raised panels I believe.Leo
Reply:Thank Papa. Sounds like the label is done very much like an emulsion transfer, in photography. You can by printer paper to print them off at home now. I've got a robot lamp that needs decals and I'm going to try them for it. Like NVW suggested, I think looking into panel bits from Freud or CMT, etc. might be a good bet. If not exact, they could get you close enough to hand finish the rest of the way. Thanks again,Bert200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:is the neck  goingto resist bending under the stress of the strings? i dont recall seeing a guitar made from one piece of wood like that, the neck is always a seperate  reinforced piece.  as no doubt you are aware.....
Reply:NVW and Bert Thanks for the direction UR right. Freud makes a lot of panel shapers but none in oval  unfortunately.  My best bet  might be to find one that is thick enough and then modify it. ? is how... lathe maybe with tooling, it is carbide steel?   I  got no clue if this is easy or needs diamond bits and great skill? Weldbead, excellent ? and has been thrashed around for about 60+ years.  When Leo made the first Telecasters, called Broadcasters in the very early 50's, he did not use a truss rod. He felt the Maple one piece neck about 1" thick and flat sawn would do the trick. He was right.  He even had George White at near 200# stand on a neck between two chairs... BUT, the sales people told him nope.  "If you want to sell them you gotta have an adjustable truss rod in the neck.  Gibson has 'em, Gretsch has them, Epi has them etc  etc." So... Leo gave in and added the truss rod via a concave  curved routed slot on the back of the neck. We nickname this routed and Koa filled stripe the ~Skunk~  stripe on Teles.Later when he used a rosewood or maple cap fretboard the rout was done from the front and under the fretboard. You don't see it  that way.  Strats are done that way.  I totally agree with adjustable necks, the string tension in ft/lbs. is way higher than folks realize.  It is good to have control on the adjustment on longer necks. This neck is  1 5/8" thick and very short, only 22.5" scale versus 25.5" standard. It  can handle the strain with no problems,  Also, the action, string height will be higher than normal so the slides don't buzz the frets. The trick will be to make it high enough to keep from buzzing but low enough to play it with fingers at the frets  and not be too sharp on the notes.. I've done that on an old Supro, I'm hoping to do it here before I'm done. . I am even going to use very heavy strings on the final set up to get a bigger sound and it will remain aok.  Excellent second ? too. Thru the body neck  design is used on several guitars and virtually all lap steels.  A Gibson 335 for ex, is a thru the body neck design with the hollow body glued on around the basic assembly.   Later, I am headed toward a seperate body and neck next but I'll keep the scale at 22.5". It will have  a skunk stripe and adjustable truss rod and be a 4 screw "bolt on" neck just like 1952. We'll have a pocket battleship conventionally played guitar with hot pickups and  Tele attitude than will tuck in the closet or RV easily.  Thanks for the kind words Tackit, glad it struck your fancy.Last edited by PapaLion; 04-21-2011 at 08:06 PM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:I wanted to show that this guitar had a lot of flexibility so I set it up with different tunings and amp set ups for the songs. The first one, a Muddy Waters kinda blues slide thing is DGBgbd  >Lo  to hi strings... this is a pretty good tuning, ez to do. The amp here was a 1955 Fender Tweed Dlx. no effects.  Guitar in rear positon no tone just twang. The second song uses the same tuning but in the middle position with tone control and thru the 1961 Concert Amp and tremelo. The third one is a minor tuning.  Drop the b (#5) to a  b flat... The guitar control switch is put in neck position forward which is a pre set bass tone. Ya' get a kind of dark sound in minors  Unusual tuning, not common. The last one is a C6 tuning.  CEGace and thru the Concert with a little tremelo and a little Delay.  This is a common hawaiian and cowboy tuning.  I just faked that one  new 2 me.  Would be great for Tornado parties, which ya' might just have?  Hope UR aok on those. Most of these were new to me also, so get out on Utube and find some examples and maybe even a good learning video and go to it.   You can break strings sometimes from too much tension, if it feels too tight? It is!   Use a smaller string if it breaks or is way too tight,  want more tone or it is sloppy loose? use a heavier string.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:I've become quite a bellyacher  well that's 'cus the meds screw up my belly darn it.Bert, get a box and keep things for that guitar all together... U find a tuning key set then a pickup somewhere else etc... soon UR ready to go. A note to all who wander about at garage sales etc.  One brand is hot right now.. Teisco from Japan (go look on Google to see 'em must be ten models).  The only thing really valuable is the pickups which used to be a dime a dozen and now are $2-300 each in excellent shape.  This one is Ez, if the sound works U got a deal at $50.   Lots of folks want these lately.  I sold off a 1/2 dozen of them five years ago for about $100 each.  Just like stocks huh?Hey Dualie, how ya' doing?  I got too many amps.  I collected amps because I was an AT (aviation electronics) in the Navy so I understood tube amps.  Lots of broken ones around to fix up.  BUT, I should have collected more guitars and less amps. They weigh less, store better and more valuable/dollar invested.  I own about a dozen early tweeds (1952-1959) and several  browns (1960-62), and 3-4 whites (1963-4) then quite a few blackfaces from the mid  to late 60's. I only kept one new amp all the time I was a Fender dealer, a 2x10 Red Lizard skin covered Prosonic which is the best newer amp I've ever heard and was the 1996 50th  Anniversary amp.  Please let your friends pm me if they want to buy any... I can spare a few at about high end of ebay prices. There is a rule at my home.. no more than three amps in the living room at once. It is a good rule, a fair rule  I suppose.    However, I will say, she is not at home during the  day; she still teaches and I am more or less home alone retiredLast edited by PapaLion; 04-30-2011 at 05:41 PM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
