I want to build a 2' x 3' welding table out of 1/4" or 3/8" steel plate. I can buy a new piece from Lowell Steel, but was wondering if there are any used steel places around that sell less than full sheets of materials at cheaper prices? All the scrap yards I called did not sell any steel scrap.Chris

Reply:Mid city is less than 5 minutes from me. I dont know if they sell scrap though?
Reply:Also check with Admweld, over on the Miller boards ... lives and works in the Boston area .....
Reply:True, most scrap yards are not looking for retail steel sales; But even as an out of town stranger, I've never been turned away from a scrap yard with a public scale when trying to buy reusable steel. They have to know that you're a serious no hassle buyer, who respects the value of their time. Don't telephone, or hit 'em up at 4:59.Show up with your truck, cash, and proper work gear, ready to make a quick, honest deal.Your size plate but thicker, falls off from under and behind electric fork truck batteries. OR Mark the piece you want at the torching station.Good Luck
Reply:Well, I just went ahead and ordered it new from Lowell Steel today.I think I will have to take a drive down to mid-city to check it out.Chris
Reply:In your area I would say try Max Levine,on Tanner st.in Lowell.but like the others said you are probably better off to go there. or Tomberello in Haverhill,Ma?(I think that's where it is,but it may be Lawrence?)
Reply:If you find A place to buy metal in the lowell area I would appreciate any and all info as I am a newbe I have never welded before I have a china 131 dual mig Im just A hobbiest
Reply:Mid -City has 2 places..a steel yard and their scrap annex down the street. If you go to their website they have an inventory that is pretty well maintained.I emailed them a request for a price the other day and they returned it within a half an hour.Miller Syncrowave 180Miller 211 w/ spool-gunLincoln Ac/Dc buzzboxCutmaster 38 plasmaVictor,Smith's,and Craftsman (Harris) O/A torches.DeWalt Multi cutterFiber Metal helmets(old school)Enough Snap-On to be a dealer
Reply:Mid city has 3 location, 1 in CT. They started as a scrap yard and went to new products as well. They also have and inventory on line of Cuts, and surplus material that are held in the yards that is cut priced. Go on line and find Mid City and you can navigate and look at the material. Also if something is in 1 yard they may throw it on one of there trucks and bring it to the yard nearest you. Reply:Mid City is a great yard, I have used them for years. Turner in Bridgewater does sell drops, but you have to ask. Now that I am in Marlboro I use Sullivan Metals out of Worcester. If I need small stuff or AR plate I have a guy in Grafton I go to.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ." |
