Been doing stick welding for a little while now in school. Have been doing horrizontal welding for the past 2 weeks and my teacher wants me to more onto vertical and was wondering what yous think of my horrizontal welds first. Welds are on 1/4 inch plate using 6010.Here is a t-joint weld I did last night also. The root and 2 cover passes were done using 6010 with 1/8 inch plate. Amps were set to about 100.
Reply:Have you tried breaking that last T joint to see how well it was fused into the joint?Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:Have not tried that yet. I welded both sides of that T so tommorow night in class I'll weld up a few more and break them to see how they look.
Reply:Looking pretty good. 6010 isn't known for it's asthetic qualities. Keep up the good work.
Reply:Looks pretty good but are the welds concave? Maybe they just look that way. If so turn down the heat and stop stepping.. Just make a nice looking convex straight bead. Them are the best. Harold

Reply:Good appearance. Yes you are ready to try something else like verticals. If you have not realized; The spacing and size of the ripples is determined by the frequency of your whipping and the speed of your forward motion. If you increase the number of whips per second while keeping forward speed the same the ripples will become finer. Reduce the whip frequency and increase forward speed and the ripples become larger.

Reply:We started doing vertical and after a few week practice here is one of my 7018 cover passes. Welds are on 1/4in plate with a 6010 root and 3 7018 cover passes ontop of it. Amps for the first two covers passes was around 105 for the 3rd and final cover I upped it to like 120amps. The passes was done vertical up I just held the piece upside down in the pic sorry.and this is a test the teacher had us do the other night so he could see our root and our 3 cover passes. I messed up on the first cover so I'm going to do another one tonight but what do yous think of the rest of it, or if you have any advice on how to improve or things to try tonight at school id apprechiate it. ThanksLast edited by BB70Chevelle; 04-01-2010 at 02:55 PM.
Reply:That looks pretty darn good. It looks like you need to turn your heat up a lil bit on your 7018 passes. Have you ever tried a gold lens in your hood? If not try one, it lets you see your puddle in color not just the green tint. The puddle of steel looks orange and the slag looks pink. They are great for pipe welding. I've been a X-ray pipe welder for almost 18 years and a gold lens is all I'll use. Keep up the good work dude, You're on the right track.
Reply:No, I have not tried using a gold lens yet but, Will try one once I get a non auto darkening helmet. Right now I am using a speedglas 9100v. Here is another weld I did last night. Only change from the previous welds shown is I upped the heat a bit to see how it would work and look as you suggested I try. For the first two 7018 cover passes I had the the amps set at like 115-120 and for the final cover I upped it to 135-140amps.
Reply:Is there a way that you can smooth out you weave some? I believe you want to do the opposite with your setting such as going hotter on the intermediate passes and then turing down a little on the cover pass since the plate is already hot.

Reply:Thank you all for your suggestions and after trying a few of them my cover pass seems to have gotten much better. Weld was done with 1/4 plate 6010 root 110 amps and 3 7018 covers at 125amps. Teacher then had me move onto overhead, here is a pic of my very first overhead stick welds. Was done with 1/4 plate, 6010 rod, and 125amps.
Reply:Looks good man, keep on practicing and stick without. There is money to be made by developing exceptional stick welding skills. |
