I found a miller maxstar 140, and the guy wants $500 for everything.  He says it is a tig, which I'm looking to move up to.  Sounds like an honest guy, but I'm wary of anything on craigslist.  Here's a link to the ad...let me know what you guys think.  It includes a bottle of argon for welding stainless (which I'd like to get into eventually).Miller 140Also considering this one:http://www.weldingsuppliesfromioc.co...RC-95S-/Detail
Reply:I don't know what to make of this. You will need argon for tig regardless. The link is either wrong or is this spam?Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 and WP17. 75A AC is for pipe thawing!HH 140 - new addtion 9/2012.I didn't agree, but hoped for Hope and Change.I got change for myself and my family: for the worse. This is the reality of: Barackalypse Now. Reply:I just got the 150 STL, its a great welder with a little higher duty cycle than the 140, also don't need a torch with the valve with it like you need with the 140. I see 150 STLs on CL often for $500-$800, I would look for one of those instead of the 140.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

I don't know anything about that unit, but it looks pretty sweet for jobs where portablility is important.  I'd worry about duty cycle more than anything.
Reply:My buddy has that THERMAL ARC 95S in your second link and really likes it.  I tried it out and the tig arc is very stable.  No foot control available however.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:The 140 is a neat older machine, a forerunner of the 150 series, but not without issues. Aside from age, it has more primitive circuitry meaning it draws more current than the 150's. Also I've heard of reliability problems with them.I would also recommend a 150stl, its modern equivalent.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Are u looking for a basic DC tig to learn on?   U know u you need AC if u want to do Aluminum TIG.    The maxstars are DC only I think...Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:You can get a TA161S for around $450 brand new.It's not a miller, so resale value will be lower.  It's 110/220 and has lift tig also.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:Originally Posted by jdlevCan you explain duty cycle (sorry...i'm the ultimate noob at this stuff)...Is that the amount of time you can use the welder before you shut it down for a time period to keep it from overheating?
Reply:Originally Posted by OldendumDon't shut it down, just stop welding for a bit.  You need to leave the fan running.  Percentage duty cycle is based on the number of minutes you can weld at a stated current during a 10 minute period.  For example, a unit might be rated at 30% at 120 Amps. That would be three minutes of welding during a 10 minute period.
