hello all first let me say i am not a welder i just tack metal crafts together for my wife, this forum has been a great learning tool and i thank everyone. ok on to my question my wife would like me to bend some horse shoes for a project but i have no oxy set up can i use mapp gas to heat the metal enuff to bend it? she wants them to resemble  ribbon thanks kevin
Reply:You are going to have a hard time getting enough heat out of a small MAPP torch.  You might try a big charcoal fire and blow air through a piece of pipe with a hair dryer. A big propane weed burner might work."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:you now have three opinions..no harm in trying the mapp torch, you dont need a ton of heat for a horseshoe..have fun..if it dont work buy you a nice oa setup and thank the wife for it..:)oldendum so sorry to see about yer son..why are you cookin that anvil?
Reply:yes thanks for all the options but i think i will try the mapp just have to heat a small area of it if it don't work i will thank my wife for me buying a small oxy set up
Reply:It could be an aso from Harbor Freight or ebay, in which case no big deal, or it could be really cold and he is wanting to preheat so the anvil doesn't suck the heat out of the work piece. Or I could be completely mistaken. In my user pic, I am using OA to heat 1/4" bar and bending. I would think that mapp would work just fine to get the horseshoe hot enough to bend. I prefer coal, but I have reached low forging temps on 1/2 round bar using just a wood fire.138# anvilHomebuilt 6 tap kegerator100# cone anvil5" post viceVarious hammers ranging from 250g to 2000gSome tongsA few screwdriversA wrench or twoOh, and a Fronius TPS 2700
Reply:Lay them under this on the next launch. It will get the job hot enough to bend them for you. Attached Images

Reply:What about a acetylene turbo torch ?  This can be used with a full size  tank and adapter http://www.victortechnologies.com/tu...odID=0386-0336Where you located ?? If your near me I have one you can try.
Reply:You can use a MAPP torch.  I have heated and bent many horseshoes, as well as smaller bar and rod stock with my MAPP over the years since I don't have O/A or a forge.  It just takes a bit longer than you might like.  Don't use the pencil flame tip if you want wide bends, use the flare tip.  For tight bends the pencil is OK, but still takes a while.  Move your flame on alternate sides while heating, otherwise it will heat unevenly and bend likewise.  One tip...don't clamp the metal in your vise and try to heat close to the vise.  It works as a heat sink and you'll never get there.  You need to have the metal 2-3 inches or more away from the vise jaws.

Reply:Those weed burner forge pics were just random finds.  The first one is supposedly from Tai Goo, who is an accomplished bladesmith.  I think the other was a guy heat treating a homemade railroad track anvil."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
