I know it's weldable since they welded it at the factory. The thing is I don't like the sparks that are coming off it. It may just be these new grinding wheels I've got but they don't look like plain steel sparks to me. Reply:Might want to run some brake cleaner over it first to get that oil off along with the rust with a grinder or blaster and then re run your spark test minus the contamination.  Rust will mess with how a spark presents as will paint and oil so clean it up first.I'd have to imagine that its mild steel but it could be high strength low alloy if its a heavy duty spool.
Reply:I'll have to do it again with a different wheel. These new wheels I've got are a lot harder than I like and don't grind that well.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:I know about the brake cleaner issue. I make my own "brake cleaner" so I know what goes in it and that it's safe.   As pictured it's been scrubbed with diesel and there really isn't much grease on it. What you see is actually paint and looks like some oil got slopped on it from one of my helpers cleaning today.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Irish, since that is a critical part in a whinch I would do the easiest thing and call Tulsa.  If it is for you then no big deal, but if it is for a customer I would cover my butt.  If it fails and drops a load you will get the fall out from the repair.  Hate to see you get any more greif than you already have.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:Yeah I've thought about that. I have my doubts that they would be willing to give a welding procedure for it but it's possible.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:I wanted to sayits just a damn drum, make it clean and weld it, but I won't. Its regular ole steel, but I won't.opps, nevermind
Reply:Actually I've been waiting for all the safety guys to start yelling about how unsafe it is to even think about welding it. I can't say that I'm not concerned about it myself. But I'm sure there's a way to fix it. I just wanted to see if anybody had any concrete info for a welding procedure.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:Ductile iron??? Already welded, ductile would fit the duty requirements for abrading with winch cables, pretty rugged stuff. Shinier chips and breaks than gray cast."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
