Well with getting the grinders off my welding table I decided to add some hooks to the grinder stand so I could get some of the pile of clamps off the back. Then while at it I decided to add some pieces to the back gap where we keep our hammers so they would stop falling down into the scrap pile.   Since the welding table was as clean as it has been in years I decided I might get a few pics of it. I built this table about 25 years ago. I was still working out of a scrap pile when I built it. I used a old set of headache racks for stock. The angle that ran down the bed was used for the frame. I then put a piece of bridge plate I had laying around and used the expanded metal from the headache rack and some of the rods to finish filling out the table. I was aiming for something that would allow me to cut comfortably with the torch. It's worked better than you could imagine for years now. It allows clamping front and back of the plate, cutting in the gap, and larger pieces sit reasonably flat across the rest.   I also came up with a method of mounting my vice so that I could adjust it's height. I positioned the vise so that the back jaws just cleared the front of the table so I could clamp pieces across the front. If I have something long that I need to support I just lay a piece of metal sticking out the front of the table (sometimes I even clamp it!). With the vise all the way down the top of the jaws are level with the table to get it out of the way of a large piece. The next step up is where I use it most. Then there's all the way up for when you need to get close to the work. The old vise came from Sams years ago. It's held up to some bad abuse for years now. The jaws where never perfectly parallel but I never have gotten around to fixing them. I have another vise just like that I used for better work. It's in a lot better shape and was perfect from the box.   As you can see in the pics I have a lot of stuff hanging off the table. The bench centers I have on the back are handy for building up small shaft and the like. Reply:Here's the other pic of the vise.  Also here's my handy clamping square. It allow me to clamp frames square while I weld it. There's also a pic of a deep throat clamp I made for a job one time. It comes in handy as well. It's just 14ga 2" tubing with 1/8" reinforcements added. I wanted it to be light enough to handle but be stiff. Reply:Nice work but oh the clutter.
Reply:Yeah it's time to have the boys clean out the scrap pile again. My main scrap pile is about 100 yards down the hill. So we throw the small stuff under the welding table till it gets big enough to take the loader and move it.  The other around the drill press is about 3-4 projects that are waiting on parts.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:Question for ya, where did you get that nut for that deep throat clamp?  MAC's here has a bunch of that threaded rod they use for clamps but I don't know how I would get a female threaded nut.
Reply:Dont worry about the clutter. If you throw something out tomorrow youll need it. I have a shelf under my welding table which overflows onto the floor under the table and sometimes 2 feet around it. Looks like your shop just gets used. See too many shops that look like they dont get used.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer

Reply:As long as it gets used thats the big thing, I just happen to have issues with other peoples clutter in my work area only because it almost always reflects on the quality of their work and the pride they take in it.  My computer desk looks like it should be in a teenage girls room with all the clutter on it and my car is never fully clean but when it comes to my work space I keep it clean and put extra parts away close by.  My thing is that I hate having to clean up after someone else so that I can do my job and the cleaning up usually entails cleaning up trash and debri and safety issues as well.  One of my instructors from when I went to school has his own shop and it is a giant ball of clutter but it gets used just not like it should due to a slow economy and I've been itching badly to get in there and organize it up so call me OCD I guess.
Reply:Hi AntiblingYou can check Enco at use-enco.com the have acme threaded rod and nuts both left and right hand up to 1-1/2" X 4.  Or you can get standard threaded rod and coupling nuts to make your own clamps.  The coupling nuts have about 3 times the threaded length I've used them before on projects.have funTom
