Had a spare vise laying around. I found it in the scrap bin at my work, the swivel base was busted so they chucked it. I just made it a fixed base obviously... I was playing with my new torch setup I love it. i cannot believe I have worked this much without a torch! Just getting used to it and I was messing with diff techniques for my welder. I have a hard time with the .045 wire. I knew I should have gone with 035 but its ok. All 1/4" plate and 2" .250 square, still need to smooth up the edges and paint it up.. maybe tomorrow. Reply:Fordman, if you like the OA cutting, try a plasma cutter and you will be in heaven. My PM 1000 is a beast, ready to cut whatever at a moments notice. I always seem to run out of stuff to cut with it, but thats OK too. Thats a good lookin repurpose. Nothin better than a zero investment tool that does a good job. Those of us on a budget really appreciate ideas like that.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys? Trade?
Reply:Can't beat a free Wilton vise. I am sure that was $200-$300 new. Those welds look great!
Reply:I have got a chinese 40a plasma that actually works pretty good. I have used it a lot, but I really like the versatility of a torch. You can do a lot more with it and it cuts really nice. I was pretty excited about the free wilton! I mean it is a bit used and abused but it still works fine!HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:New guy question: in your third pic, is the bottom weld on the gusset undercut into the gusset? Not trying to criticize, I'm learning! Your answer will be most helpful.
Reply:I dont see any undercut, where are you talking about? At the very end of the gusset? I guess you could call that undercut a bit where I just burned into the end of it... Wouldnt matter thoughHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.

Reply:Weldbead and Fordman: thanks for your answers. My welds have been criticised for being too cold. Because of your explanations, I better understand and will slow down.Nice save with your vise. I have two vises rolling around in the shop. When I need to use one or both I clamp them to the table and fly. However, that is merely an interim measure as I hope to have time to build a proper mount as you have done here. Thanks again.Dan
Reply:I just can't believe someone threw that vise away just because the swivel base was broken. I usually mount my vises wihout the swivel base anyway. Probably I have been using crappy ones though... Maybe a quality swivel base is plenty strong. Good find!Mikel
Reply:Yeah I always rummage the scrap bins, though theres always a bunch of scrap titanium and stainless I tend to stay away from the expensive stuff. I always get a bunch of hardware and stuff out of the scrap bin too!HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition. |
