We had to splice some 1 1/8" 304 S.S. plates together because of the cost difference in a full width sheet. The plate was beveled to a V with a 1/8" land at about 80 degrees. It had to be pre-heated to 300 degrees, so I mounted the weed burner to the Bugo machine. I should have done that a long time ago. I would have saved some rubber on my shoes. 316 LT1 1/16" core wire was used because we got a smokin deal on it and didnt feel the need to order another 2 rolls of 304 for this part of the project. Most of the welding went off without a problem, accept for the occasional tip fouling, unplugging the Bugo, snagging cables on random stuff while it's trucking along and various other annoying things. We did dust every weld with the grinder because it is to be X-ray'd and we didnt want to risk any failures. Also, after a few welds, we would flip the plate over because it started pulling pretty hard towards the weld side. After everything was said and done, it came out pretty flat. Even at that, we're sending it out to be bumped flat on a big press and then water-jetted to the shape we need. The plate is approx 8' x 8' and weighs in around 3000 lbs. Reply:Why did you need to preheat austentic stainless to 300deg F? What was your max interpass temp?

Reply:Yeah, there was a small pocket towards the surface of the weld. It was quite a random thing to happen.I'm not entirely sure why they spec'd out 300, but it is what we have done in the past to conform to ASME code.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:i had to splice plate on more than one occassion, but with mild steel. I used strong backs and they helped alot. Is there any reason yall didn't use them? I didn't see any on your project. |
