Weld temps'

Anybody know what temp it takes to get that sulfer-look at the edge of the HAZ when welding mild steel?  Reason i am asking is that as i read the plugs on the race car i see the same yellow-powdery look on the ground strap of the plug - sometimes, on other plugs the ground strap looks like clean steel and i am trying to figure out what the sulfer-look is trying to tell me.Any thoughts is appreciated, thanks oj
Reply:Hello ojh, if I understand your question correctly and you are speaking of a sulfur look, I might consider that you are welding over something that has been galvanized prior to welding or has possibly had the galvanizing ground off prior to welding. The zinc in the galvanizing process will leave a yellowish border along a weld that has been done on galvanized steel along with possible silver hairlike whiskers and a silver/whitish smoke deposit.
