Test Hungry

I have a 6-G x-ray pipe test (gtaw/7018) I'm preparing for and I'm looking for all the help I can find for everything down to the unth detail. I feel I'm about 80% right now and all I need is to go through 600lbs of wire and 6 miles of pipe. I'm noticing very minute changes (ie. fit-up, gap,amps, torch angle, stick-out, travel speed) have huge effects on outcomes and I need to fine tune things. I'd pay extra for a compass that points me in the right direction.Maniak
Reply:You need to figure out what works for you NOW, and stick with it.  Dont go trying lots of different things and forget to nail down one technique.  It can be done with satisfactory results a number of different ways, the only one that matters is one that works for you.That said, a fairly popular way of running that (and how I passed my test) is as follows:37.5deg bevelfeathered land3/32 gap1/8 filler~95-105 amps depending on how your machine runsAs for stickout, travel speed and torch angle, those are variables that you should be able to figure out.  If not, I doubt your ready for a pipe test.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:snO, I'm right in there with the stuff you listed. Amps at 100 (metered).except for the 3/32" gap. I've been fitting up wider just so the 1/8" wire won't fall through. I'll fit up at 3/32" and bump up a few amps. Everything is "satisfactory" on visual inspection level and the inconsistencies are smoothing out little by little. But of course I want that root to be jewelry (perfect wedding band). Technique is not all over the place but more like splitting hairs at this point. A couple thousand more times around the pipes should do it. Thanks for your input it's appreciated.maniak
