I haven't welded in over fifteen years, but wanted to start up to make some things. I have a Lincoln HD Mig. First project is a cargo carrier that I made to fit on my spare tire carrier on my suzuki samurai. Right now I have a cooler on it. I will post more pictures below to critique, suggestions, etc. Attached Images

Reply:What effect will a loaded cooler hung aft of the rear tire have on the weight and balance of your short wheel base vehicle?I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:In the past, I borrowed a commercial made carrier that was bigger than the one I made and had it attached, and I had a cooler, camping gear and gas, and I couldn't even tell it was there.
Reply:Pretty slick. Nice samurai also
Reply:Are you sure the whole vehicle won't tip over backwards with that sewing machine motor under the hood? Just kidding... it does look slick. Nice clean design. Reply:Millerfab, I actually needed to have something on the back of the Samurai to act like a wheelie bar so when I take off from a stoplight I don't flip the thing over !! ha haWas wondering if anyone had any advice on the max weight I should put on something like this. While I only plan on using it for a cooler rack when I go 4WD, I could have future plans (jack, camp gear, etc). Might be hard to judge from my pictures, but it is 1/2 square tube welded to a plate that has 4 tube posts that are welded to another plate that attachs to the wheel carrier. I had 50 pounds of weight in the cooler and bounced it around a little, and it seemed really sturdy. Any ideas ?

Reply:My first ride was an 84 Suzuki Samurai it ran 73mph, sometimes 80 if I could get it rolling down a big hill! I wanted a Chevelle SS, but my Dad liked the idea of a 73mph ride. He did cool it up by getting me some mud tires and rims which dropped the top speed to 68mph; I think he did that on purpose! |
