i need help im trying to up hill a 7018 and my puddle keeps falling out whats the problemRod Burner
Reply:What pipe thickness areyou welding? What size rod? amps?7018 is not hard to run virticle up if done correctly.Electrode angle, tecnique, heat and travel speed are keys.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:need more details but if I had to guess I would say you are either holding the rod at too low of angle or have the heat set a little too high.  Or a combination of both.I keep the rod at almost 90 degrees, I have seen others run it a little lower.  To each their own, gotta find what works for you.
Reply:You could also be moving to fast, if you dont give the puddle a chance to build up and give you a shelf to stack the following metal on, it just runs out on you.  If this is the case, slow down and give the weld a chance to fill it.  Unless your running wayyy to hot, your probably fine on the amps.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:2 inh pipe /6 inch pipe amps 98- 110  im tiging the root . Hot pass and cap 1/8  7018Rod Burner
Reply:2inc sch 40 6inch  sch 40  im tiging the root .Hot pass and cap 1/8 7018  amps is about 98 to 110Rod Burner
Reply:on 2" pipe i think you would be better off using 3/32 rod and not 1/8
Reply:i undewr stand what your saying  . im trying to test for a job and they want 1/8 rod on 2'' inch pipe . so im trying to fine the best way to weld 7018 1/8  . and try to figer out what im doing wrong
Reply:I'm surprised that they are testing you with scheduled 40 pipe.  Every test I've seen lately was done on 2" schedule 160 pipe and being that your using schedule 40, that 1/8 rod gets everthing too hot and falls out.  I'm not saying it can't be done but either thicker pipe or smaller rod would make it easier.
Reply:right thats what so odd  this  test is  for a pipe line jobRod Burner
Reply:Are you keeping a super tight arc length? Whenever I get boogered up and loose my tight arc lenth that seems to happen. But just like the other have said 3/32 is always my choice for out of postion welding with lo-hy unless its 5p then 1/8th is what I use for root and hot pass.
Reply:thank you for  helping me out . Im going to try the  3/32  i will  let you know how i doRod Burner
Reply:well  i found out it is 2inch tig all out  6'' inch  5p  3/32  stick all out  now i have a. Question  for you . about tig torches what would you use  a big torch or small to walk a round a  2 '' and 6'' inch pipe ..o by the way it going  real good .Rod Burner
Reply:For TIG torches, have some different cups handy. Our instructor has his TIG students (on 2" and 6", all wall thickness) start out with a #8 standard cup, but some prefer anywhere from a 5 to 6 or 7 cup for running the root.As they get more proficient, they usually move to a medium gas lens with the same number cups along with a 10 cup for the outer passes. The torches are all WP-17FV flex heads.Cups are cheap of course, and the torch heads are about thirty bucks. The instructors themselves (who are experienced pipe weldors) tend to like jumbo gas lens collet bodies with a 10 or larger cup for most work.

Reply:ill tell you what that 5 p 3/32  i pitty good on a little less on a 1/8 inch gap . on 6'' pipeRod Burner
Reply:are you using any type of weave technique? i go with a figure 8 usually but on anything 6g i try more of a zig-zag motion. it allows time for the puddle to cool yet not enough time to get inclusions
Reply:now when you mean zig zag  side to side or is it  left to right at 45* going up hill motionRod Burner
Reply:keep the zig zag movement horizontal whatever the pipe angleG
