I am taking classes in college for inert gas(tig welding) We use touch start, and I noticed they leave it on SMAW and don't switch it over to GTAW on the machines when they tig weld. We are welding on 18 gauge carbon steel and I run at about 50-70 amps in the GTAW and its really hard to get the puddle on a T joint, but when I switch it over to SMAW setting it makes a huge difference and the puddle forms faster, but the arc doesn't break like on the GTAW setting.. Why is this, and should I just use GTAW and turn the heat up?Oops forgot to add im using 2% thoriated 3/32 tungstenLast edited by smilexelectric; 02-15-2013 at 04:34 PM.
Reply:What machines are we typing about? On a AB/P330 that's impossible....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:What machine? I guess they don't have remote controls either? What does your instructor say? That is pretty wacky in my opinion. I would think like you that it should be switched.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:They are invertec 275, no remotes. we have 4 foot pedal machines precision tigs. it says remote on the machine but i dont think it has high freq or lift arc.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...69-3/e2161.pdflooks like these.he just says no use these settings. when i ask him about the settings.Last edited by smilexelectric; 02-15-2013 at 05:41 PM.

Reply:Link you posted says it has a setting for "touch start tig" witch should be similar to lift start. What are the exact settings and switch positions? You say it says "remote" on the machine, is the switch on the "remote" position or local? I'm also wondering about the hot start position and arc force setting setting..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:I think on smaw the machine outputs 48volts and on gtaw ~24volts, I have very limited exp with smaw though. If I'm right you'll have about 2x the energy input when welding on smaw  setting--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:LOCAL/REMOTE SWITCH - Place in the“LOCAL” position to allow output adjustment at themachine. Place in the “REMOTE” position to allow outputadjustment at remote pot or amptrol. In Remote, themachine output control pot is the limit setting for remotecontrol.MODE SWITCHCC -Stick (SMAW) Use this mode for all stick welding.Output energized when machine is on.TIG (GTAW) Optimized for touch start use. Short circuitcurrent is limited to approximately 20 amps to aid in touchstarting. In TIG (GTAW) mode, the Local/Remote switch also controlsif the output is energized. Here is a link to the manual:http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...oln3/im802.pdf
Reply:I don't know that machine, but I know that on my Miller, switching between SMAW and GTAW reverses the polarity.  DCEP may be fine for SMAW, but it isn't ok with GTAW.
Reply:On smaw there is heavy arc force, as adjustability on the machine, when switched to gtaw it cuts that arc force out, so you don't get a long jumping arc when you pull the torch out.Leave it on gtaw and turn you heat up it your having trouble getting a puddle. And as stated before the voltage output changes.Last edited by astaindsoul5446; 02-16-2013 at 10:31 AM.Miller bobcat 225g  - spoolmatic 1Mm250 - 30a spoolMiller spectrum 375Thermal arc 95 Everlast Ex 250As the boiler turns, these are the days of our lives
Reply:I have an INVERTEC 250S. Its similar to yours and in GTAW you have to use REMOTE setting with a remote control. GTAW doesnt work in LOCAL For scratch start, use local and SMAW. As already mentioned, GTAW gives you TOUCH START/LIFT START for TIG. Im pretty sure ARC FORCE and SOFT START only work in SMAW. SOFT START gives you a boost of electricity when starting an electrode.Ive been wondering if REMOTE works in SMAW but I havnt tried, too much spatter.Last edited by Insaneride; 02-16-2013 at 11:07 AM.
Reply:Just goes to show you how crappy my teachers are. Now I understand why some companies have hard times finding qualified welders. It is because lazy and arrogant pricks like so are teaching these kids how to weld. Good thing I had some solid foundations laid at my previous school.
