If you could only pick one type of welding process what would it be and why? Stick, mig, tig, flux core???And is Stick welding still king of the welding world?Last edited by Paddypower; 02-21-2013 at 04:23 PM.
Reply:I'd say MIG is for versatility in industrial settings but for home use... SMAW would be number one.
Reply:There's really so many welding applications It's tough to name just one process as "king". Granted there are processes that are more common in certain areas than in others. You won't find a lot of stick being used for auto body work commercially for example, but for structural steel it's probably #1, though FC is becoming more prevalent than it was before. You won't find many structural guys doing tig, but you'd find a lot doing stainless and alum and in some piping applications. Mig tends to lend itself to production welding in factories. You'd need to narrow down the fields to get a good answer to your question..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:they all have their place, equally id say.i stick and tig, alot more than i mig. (i don't touch anything but stick at work), but at home its usually tig and mig. but i like them all. however on large stuff i prefer stick over mig...no reason just personal preference.Miller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250
Reply:DSW hit it on the head I think. Today at work I was tigging aluminum early in the morning then moved on fabbing and migging up brackets, then caught up to my partner who was structural stick welding all day. So thats a tuffy to say whos king.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Like everybody said, it depends on situation. That's why the manufactures make sooooooooomany machines. Just so we can buy more !!!!!
Reply:if the question was, if you could only choose one which would be the most versatile and which would you pick because you can only pick one, then I'd probably say tig, because you can do almost anything with tig where you are a bit more limited with stick on the thin stuff and mig may not be the best for certain things, but, still doesn't make it king because there are many many things that although yes a tig can technically do it, one of the higher depositing methods would be way more practical and allow you to complete the job in a fraction of the time... there really is no king when you're talking about all around do anything, each process can be better than the rest for a specific type of job.comparing a tig to a stick is like comparing a fine line touch up brush to a paint roller, which is "best"? as you can see, it depends what you're doingmiller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....

Reply:Remember one thing, Stick is all weather. I have seen and been a part of a group of welders whose job it was to keep a fleet of snow plows running during snow storms so emergency vehicles could operate. I have welded on heavy equipment covered in snow ,mud, salt and anything else you can think of. Stick isn't perfect but it sure can cut through the yuk when a truck needs to get back out on the road. I have stick welded in rain, snow, sleet, and over 90 degrees with 30 mile hour winds blowing. If I was just starting out, the first welder I would buy is a stick welder and then a good mig. I started out on an old lincoln AC buzz box and when I went to welding school I didn't need DC to weld. I could weld out of position in AC so DC was a breeze to learn. I passed my structural weld test the first night of class with AC. My instructor couldn't weld as good as me in AC.
