So i have been self training myself to stick weld the last 2 months..ive basically just been practicing flat lap and T fillet joints..Here is a picture of my 6013 fillet..I have consistanly been doing a clean fillet weld over and over, im getting no slag and no undercut...So what should i practise next..a different joint?? different position?thanks Attached Images
Reply:Looking good - have you tried butt joints yet?  That would be my next one.  Don't forget multi-pass welds in each position. You also need each type of weld in the vertical position.  Down for light metal, up for heavy stuff.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Thanks for the advice Dave
Reply:After they can show they can run basic beads on flat plate in position and then overlap that bead by 50%, we have our students do lap joints 1st, T joints 2nd, outside corners 3rd and finally beveled but joints. After they pass each one they can go on to the next. When all the joints in the flat position are signed off, they can then start on Horizontals, followed by vertical and finally overhead. For stick it's a bit more complicated, as for each joint, they need to get signed off for three rods, 6010, 7014 and 7018. So they need to do 3 plates ( twice,  plain and overlapped 50%), 3 laps, 3 T's ( signed off on a single bead, 2 cover beads overlapping the 1st by 50% and finally a weave to cover that in flat and vertical.) , 3 outside corners and finally the bevel but joint ( stick usually a 6010 root, 7018 out, weave on flat and vertical as cap)..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:positions positions positions...thats what it's all about. set up an armature or tack stuff to the table as weird as you can. I used to litterally set up a joint and sling it into the table, down the legs,or even underneath the table and tack it any way that it landed. then i had to figure out how to lay the weld. overhead, V. up, V down, etc, etc.  stuff joints close to the ground so you have to sqeeze under. Rod benders are always fun. set the joint to you can only access it with a bent rod. just bend enough to run the whole weld. the joints your working on dont have any real fit up. practice but joints and the like with proper bevels, root gaps, and lands. Proper fit up's are a huge thing to learn. have fun and spice it up. welding is more about welding the same good bead no matter the material, position, and other variables, then being able to weld a sweet flat joint, hah.
