I know a guy here in Yuma that owns a boat shop. I was sneaking around his shop when I found out he had a Miller Synchrowave 250. Well, he has a welder come in and do prop repairs. I asked if I could take a picture of these prop tools and he said yes, as long as I wasn't telling any fishtales about how I was actually doing the work. So, anyways, here is a picture of some tools I don't know how to use, but I thought it was pretty cool. You can only see what's behind me here, but there was a lot more stuff!!!Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:so...I see how they have the bevel on the tool. Can you show how you set up a prop on the tool and how it works? I can see how a prop, like the one on my old pontoon, was a 15P, but it was the kind with a removeable hub. What about height? How do you use each tool for different height props, or length, I guess is the word. Do you need 4 different tools for each pitch but different lengths? Then is that just for hammering it out? What about balancing? This is interesting to me. There is no way I could weasel in on this boat shops welder, so don't go thinking I am after that. Nor would I really want to. But just seeing how it's done step by step is neat.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:I saw that thread. I don't see how the prop is positioned on the form. Looks like it is just resting on it. How do you position it on the form? Is there two parallel axis lined up? Or are they just set on them and hey, that's good enough? The second picture in that thread doesn't show whats holding the hub in place, so I don't know. It's not a big deal. I can just go down to the boat shop and watch the guy do it sometime. He said he would be in there Monday morning. hmmmmmLincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I would also like to know how props get balanced after the repair.
Reply:go watch him --it will self explain once watched ,,,  my block stands are made from 8 inch I-beam with plates welded on top and bottombottom is bolted to floor, the top has holes that hold the block  there s a 1 in hole  drilled in topthen a bolt was welded to it .. it holds the prop like the shaft does  i use washers to space up or down for hieght andnut to hold tightAS to balancing  i use a static balancer (like old tire balancer) heavy blade falls downhave only had to send off one prop in 20 yrs to get spun ballancedi will try to get pics of stands later to dayidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441

Reply:yeah, but if you do good work you'll have a never-ending stream of idiots like me at your door!Prop-Doc, I ended up with a 4-blade the last time I monged my prop (went from a three blade to a 1.5 blade in seconds), and my local boat store only had the 4..  it's the same 19 degree pitch so what the heck.. Now what the dickens is going on!?!?  I'm down like 300 RPM at full tilt boogy and my speed is the same..  fuel consumption is down a bit, too..  I am confused and alarmed, and I have no clue what's going on!
Reply:Wiregeek,When you go from a 3 blade to 4 blade prop you generally increase thrust but reduce speed.Old rule of thumb, for outboards, used to be by reducing your pitch by 1" you increased the RPM by 200.An outboard should be "propped" so as to achieve it's max rated RPM at WOT (wide open throttle).  By "overpropping" the motor, you put extra strain on the engine and will often times cause "loading up" and fouling of the plugs (along with other bad things). If it was mine, and the engine will not develop the rated RPM under normal loading, I would seriously consider looking into having about an inch of pitch removed from your new prop.Never been one to recommend lugging an engine down by overpropping the boat.Be interesting to hear prop-docs comments.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:yep going from 3 to 4 blade will increase thrust you have a extra paddle there  --they do run smoother and are easyer to balancecheck the diameter of the prop it may be a little larger (measure from center of shaft to the tip of one blade and double to give diametera 1/8 inch in measure will be a !/4 inch in diameter...  bigger will drop RPMs or smaller will increase and it could have a bigger cup (or double cup ) as compared to old propi'm guessing these are both alum props ,,, if you go from an alum to SS of same pitch you can loose RPM because the SS does not bend (flex) under the force  alum doesidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441

Reply:This has been in Craigslist for a LONG time, with the price dropping like a rock. I forget original asking price, but it was several times higher.Someone with some cash could pitch a lowball and likely score if they want to play with props.http://greenville.craigslist.org/tls/2444108923.html

Reply:Originally Posted by Joker11OK, THAT makes all the sense in the world to me now. I get it! Cool. I can tell you that all those prop tools belong to the shop. I think he hires out the welder to come in. I don't know how long that welder has been doing props at this shop, but I had one welded there before. I decided it was better to buy new props.
