There is a local steel supplier near me that advertises a "bargain barn" all sizes and shapes of metal that are drops and scraps from larger contractor orders. it is flat rate priced at $1/pound for steel, and $5/pound for aluminum and stainless. Having never bought steel anywhere but the big box stores, this seems like a good rate for what I need. Just wondering how it compares. Thanks.
Reply:I haven't bought new steel in awhile, but I was paying maybe 70 cents/lb.  There's a local pile fabrication shop that sells odd bits of leftovers for 30 cents/lb."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:I pay .54 or .57 cents a pound here in Ohio...$1 a pound seems steep, but it IS cheaper than the box stores...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:My local scrap yard got in a bunch of 18 gauge 4x10 sheets which had some surface rust maybe a dent or two, but at .24 per pound I wasn't complaining. Sent using Tapatalk
Reply:Logans prices are more than they should be IMO.  But when you need just one piece you can't really beat it unfortunately.
Reply:I bought some 12 and 14 gauge sheets not too long ago from a steel service center, they were between 67 and 70 cents a pound, delivered.
Reply:The best prices are the cheapest prices you can find in the size you need. it's always changing so it's hard to say what cost would be. I think at the $1 a lbs they are covering their costs plus leaving some wiggle room if their price changes. If it's what you need, and it's fair to you compared to what else you can get in your area I say jump on it.There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:depends:  if it is stored inside and relatively clean , yes that's reasonably fair for  small quantities .if it's just a bunch of rusty junk outside, HELL NO!   i see this all the time on Craigslist ."$1 per pound "  and it's a rusty pile  of drops that's been sitting in the weather  for years .not worth it when you'll  kill yourself cleaning the rust off  .Miller S60 feederCobramatic push/pull feederMiller CP-252tsLincoln Tig250/Tig250Lincoln weldpak 100 -italianC-H 90A- italianHarris & Victor O\Afull manual & CNC machine shop
Reply:It's stored in shelters.  I'm gonna say the price is based off that, and adding some in for PITA factor for dealing with the little guys and home owners.
