Reply:I know A LOT about those things.....I used to the be the manufacturing engineer for the TRF fab line (D6-D11).
Reply:yeller i need specs on cat frames all the time can you help
Reply:I love when the idlers pop the heads off of the cap bolts... Always a fun extraction. Antiseize is your friend on reassembly.
Reply:Steve,How bad did they get the spindle on the main frame? Will they have to take it undersize? I can't remember if the 11's have bolt on spindles.
Reply:jmtebbens i havent looked at the pivot. They just brought me the frame i pulled the cannon and put it in the shop
Reply:finished buildup on the bore will put 1 pqss on outside corner and shes ready to bore. I have designed a new boring bar that i can adapt a bore welder to and that will cut internal snap ring grooves but most likley will be winter before its done. I dont mind hand building up bores but to old to bend. Thanks for looking Steve Attached Images
Reply:Wow, how many hours did that take? It took me forever to just weld some plates to a JD550 wishbone. How many layers is that and what type and size electrode please? Reply:Looks good from here steve! Also the automated welding is your friend... more so if you are gonna keep picking on track frames that size.Looking forward to the boring thing!Matt
Reply:When I worked for the Cat dealer here I used to watch them do those build up and line bore. Verry impressive. One day I was looking for one of the welders and couldnt find him. I asked one of the shop guys where he was. He said hes in that boom welding! Man you guys really earn your money! That was a sight to see him slide out of it. It was on a 345 excovator.Learning one rod at a time
Reply:Matt im going to try and build a bore welder. I looked at some of your post and you do nice work. I love the video of the shaper i see so many just sitting around and nobody wants or knows how useful the can be. What kind of boring machine do you use. Steve
Reply:Vinceo 345 are big ones. What cat dealer did you work for

Reply:Hey thanks Steve! Shapers and a lot of other old timey stuff are neat. It's been some years since I've portable line bored, last time was for the neighbor shop on a small excavator. As for bars I just have 3 small ones 1 1/4" & 1 1/2"dia to 96" length for align boring. I have 1 each Ammco & Cedar Rapids Eng. feed boxes. Ammco 5/1 reduction box, Quick way portable drive with pulleys & other junk.I also have a small Kent-Moore stub boring machine for 3/8" to 1 1/2" bores with 4" stroke. And a Van Norman 944s cylinder boring machine for stub boring just about anything you can get it attached to.I suppose it's like classic cars with me, they will pry my junk from my cold dead hands and toss it on the sale rack one day...I have used Froussard (steam engine era equipment) to Climax & York machines in the past. A borewelder is still going to take 2-3hrs on holes that size counting setup, takedown & put away but uses much less filler and machines very nice. Thanks again for the pics, I'll be watching your thread!Matt

Reply:Thanks Duane on the bearings i used a tbar on one side and hade a 1" threaded rod and on the bearing i just made a round plate kept tension on it and rapped it with a hammer. Stevevery nice work>Innovations are what i leave behind for History
Reply:I have never used a boring machine. How do you line it up so you know you are perfectly centered?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Thanks Thiel i was glad to be finished.Stickman on this bore i set up close then i put a tool in the boring bar and swept the bolt holes on the repaired side of the frame. on the other side the hole was good i installed a dial indicator on the bar itself and swept the good hole. If its something that has a boss i always go by the outside diameter. I have had to make a tool with string and a coller from another pin when no reference to the hole i was repairing. Thaks for lookin Steve
Reply:SteveLooks great! Im sure the cust will be glad to get her back in the dirt. I thin it s amazing how people do work with metal. Spent the day with some friends at their machine shop and what I thought would be hard, Bob said thats all you need me to do? Oh how you all make it look so easy.Learning one rod at a time
Reply:Holy Shat! What would such a job cost the customer? Please forgive me, I am a newbie, and these kinds of welding jobs never even cross our minds really. Its only when people post these things that we get to see such an awesome task.
Reply:Thanks vinceo and mwalden I was happy with the finished job but i did a bit of cussing on this one. the weld was hard as h3ll. Toughest cutting ive ever done, If i ever do another one of them im going to weld the hole then put coal in it and set it on fire and slowly let the heat come down slower. Steve
Reply:MWTime and material! If someone is getting a job like this done, they know its going to be high. They have at least 3 days to get just the frame out drilling new holes for rollers. Then if its wore that bad, new under carrage and tracks too, or at least turn the pins on them. All depends on what your going for and how the rest of the machine is. In a strip mine this is the real money maker. Ive run dozers in the pouring down rain for 12 hours pushing shot rock. Not to mention the snow storms. You have to look at the cost of the repair to the cost of the machine, what maintance ect youve done latly. An 11 is the bigest dozer Cat makes, so its an important machine on the job where its at. We had D9's that were 20 yrs old in the strip, we just kept rebuilding. Same with our loaders. Excovators seem to wear out faster, operators diging over the tracks wrong, trees falling on them, stuck in places they shouldnt be,broken and bent sticks, torn buckets, and worse if they have a hammer on them!. But if you have some good operators, a dozer will make you alot of money fast! If I remember right an 11 will push like 13 yrds depending on what blade it has on it. I could be wrong, its been a while.Learning one rod at a time
Reply:The finished bore looks real good after cleanup steve. Those thin narrow bushings can take some time getting right to pull them in without a mess. Reply:FarmshopThats how they would do berrings in the final drives. They would put them in the tank, go to lunch and drop them in and as they warmed up they expand into place. They also have a warmer too for berrings in the final drives, just amazing to see how its done.Learning one rod at a time
Reply:Farmshop it does work good dosent it.Something else that i do is i have an electric fry pan in the shop full of fresh 10w40 oil i put a bearing in it and plug it in and it warms it even and when it gets about 175 i pull her out and on the shaft she goes.
Reply:Matt thanks like i said before ive done a lot of bores but not this large.. I learned a lot about everthing on this one. I have been talking with a man in ohio who has cast and repaired large castings for many years. Not knowing the makeup of the steel he thought i should preheat about 500 degrees. Also that i should shoot for 900 degrees post welding and try to slowly in a 8 hour period bring back down. for a feild guy that would be a feat. I do have a few ideas im working on. On welding say 70-11018 hes says some casters would prefer stick welding repairs on a restriced part. Matt any imput would help thanks Steve

Reply:We use Metalloy 110 x on dart truck axles and frames , preheat 500 post 500 interpass was never over 650 as most welds are over 4 or 5 feet long it seems. Pulsed mig was the way to go, never seemed to have a problem needs to be pulsed to run it in all positions as its a metal cored wire , but it sure beats stick welding and it makes a great weld seems like all the cracks in the castings on the axles were never much of a issue as it had to relieve somewhere . If i had 300 tons on top of me im sure id release stress all over the place lolI forgot how to change this.
Reply:How does the metalloy machine after post heat. ill look into thier website thanks
