Made some anchors for bouys to be dropped off the side of a ship.  14 singles, 1 double & 3 with three wheels .  All with 7018 and I did not pay any attention to the heat.  The man said to burn 4 passes to the round stock and make it stick

Reply:Surely looks like it those must be 10 to 20 years old and must weigh a ton. What kind of buoy uses anchors that size?wboldenLast edited by wbolden; 07-12-2011 at 06:15 PM.
Reply:They look like thy are for mooring bouys to tie up boats to in a marina rather than taking up dock space. The larger sizes would equate to larger boats. Usually the idea with these is that the flat surface digs into the mud and holds better than a simple weight would if the boat starts to drag  it's mooring..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I worked as a train driver and this is what the guys up my way used to use to moor boats very successfully. They used to lay 3 of them on the ocean flour in a circle at 1/3 distance apart. Then a chain ran from the top of each wheel to a central large metal ring. From that ring a chain was then hooked to a very large floating buoy on the surface to where the boat tied up. This was used to great effect in cyclones as no matter which direction the wind comes from there are always 2 wheels holding the boat in position. Using chain for the buoy meant that there was no rope floating on the surface when the tide rose and fell.  The large heavy rail wheels used to actually dig deeper with more wind pull, further enhancing their anchoring power. The local dive club used to be called in to position the wheels once dropped of the barge or boat. It took quite a bit of work but they used to do it for FREE, but most people made generous donations to their dive club. I have seen large 50' motor boats anchored on these and no movement at all, even during cyclones.
Reply:I think that they are for weather info (NOAA) stations.  I imagine that the multiple wheel anchors are for higher tidal movement areas.  Pretty economical way to go since they were from salvage.  Guy wanted the job done quickly.  Dropped a trailer with wheels on Friday and wanted to pick them up on Monday afternoon.
