Acorn table and Commerce Grinding, Dallas Tx

I made a trip from Phx to Dallas for business. While in Tx, I drove over to MS to pickup a 5x8 Acorn table. It was in ok shape but the price was right. Since i was in Tx, i figured i might as well bite the bullet and pay to have the platen blanchard ground. Commerce Grinding did a fantastic job on my welding table. $800 but it was on the grinder for half a day surfacing both sides. That grinder is the largest of its kind and is a sight to see among many other grinders, all with piles of jobs coming and going. Some of the material lying in receiving was really impressive and heavy.this green circle contains a revolving floor and a grind head lowers from above.regrinding a 12' press brake diemy small table purchased last month. its used but in mint contition. i can still see the blanchard grind marks on the top and side edges.I gotta figure out what type of base im going to build for the 5x8 platen. The stand it came with is too ghetto for me.
Reply:Those dog bone lookign pieces are for the walking gears on the draglines in coalmines. I noticed on one it had the name "War Fab" which is a contractor for the open pit coal mines in East Texas. Ive worked in some of those mines and nowadays I occassionally work in the mines up here in Wyoming. Reply:Not sure but it wouldn't surprise me if it was .125"Sure was money well spent. I work with 11ga or thinner tubing so I need the table for it's clamping ability as well as it's flat surface. I doubt I'll ever gouge or pit it's new surface.Last edited by Jimmy_pop; 06-25-2011 at 12:45 AM.

Reply:That is one big-a$$ Blanchard grinder!  I love hanging around shops that have that kind of stuff.   I had this 2'x4' top done at a small local grind shop here in Houston.  Only did one side and they only needed to take about 20 thou off...the guy was finished in about 20 minutes....$60.  Grinding probably wasn't necessary but I wanted to start out FLAT and anyway it looks mega-cool. Reply:The rigging company came this morning and set the new (used) welding table in place. I'm going to get started on building a new stand for it and hopefully have it powdercoated and installed next month.

Reply:I worked right across the street from Commerce Grinding for 17 years I watched them install that grinder and then build the building around it.  It is a sight to see,  They do great work,  and they are great people.  Great welding table.
Reply:Matt at Commerce Grinding said they bought that grinder from the US Govt. The floor of that grinder has powerful magnets to hold steel work pieces in place. My 5x8 table had a warp to it and it was not sitting on the floor flat. They had to shim my table before turning on the magnets on otherwise they would temporarily pull the warp out of the while grinding the bottom side of the table. I was impressed at the strength of those magnets cause that table top is pretty burly. Not as burly as the Weldsale though.

Reply:After divking around with shop made C clamps to work with the 1.75" holes in the welding platen, I broke down and ordered the Stronghand Tools clamp made specifically for these tables. All I have to saw is wow, this is a nice tool. And burly.

Reply:im jealous when are you going on vacation and where do u live ? is there a rsc close perhaps, ill need a forklift. lol I love the stronghand clamps i havent been able to tear one up yet.I forgot how to change this.
