Hey guys and gals, I have just started teaching myself how to weld. I have a TON to learn. My first project was a welding table that came out great IMHO. I made it from 1/8 think square tubing. I set my machine (Miller Matic 211 using 110) to what it recomends for that thickness of material. Sorry, as I am at work I don't remember the exact setting. Welding went fine, and came out good. Heres a shot of one of the better ones. Now, I went to weld some thinner square tubing the other day and kept "blowing through" the material. I had the machine set to what was recomended for that size material. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any advise?I realize that since I don't have the exact settings, and don't have a photo of the bad weld it may be impossible to give me advise, but I figured I would try. I can get the setting I used tonight when I get home, as for a photo of the bad weld, well I got rid of that peice. Thanks for the help.Cheers,Josh&Porthos.P.S. If anyone knows how I can make my photos smaller using photobucket I would love the advise on that as well.
Reply:the "corect" ssetting is just a ballpark, other factors come into play..if you are blowing through, try varying the angle of the gun ,try faster travel..try lower heat..
Reply:On thinner material you need to move a bit faster.  The heat zone on thinner material spreads very quickly and as the metal heats up you are more apt to blow through. Try increasing your travel speed when you weld thin material.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!

Reply:Be more carefull with your prep you are grinding off the strongest areas of your tubing.
Reply:Ok, all good sugguestions. This might sound stuoid, but I didn't think to speed up. I figured with the lower setting you would travel the same speed. Guess not. As I have only just started learning, and am teaching myself (with the help of a few books) this is a "trial and error" method. Prep, I don't believe I took to much off, but will check. I am VERY careful with my prep, trying to make sure the peices are perfectly clean, beveled and lined up before I even turn the welder on. All the books say that is very important. Oh, and thanks for the PB help. Photos are smaller now. Cheers,Josh
Reply:20/20 hindsight, is to always check the 'heat signature' left behind. It'll give you a ball-park idea of how the heat was absorbed into the weld joint. So far, so good, but... give me one with the lighter gauge metal. Keep your heat down and your speed up.City of L.A.
