I find stuff in the desert all the time. This is an antique iron. I will be bending up a new handle out of mild steel with a wood grip. I want to send it to my sister in law who has an actual woodburning stove. It would just be for decoration, sitting on the stove, but it will get hot. It is badly pitted. How would you fill the pits? Tig braze a brass alloy on the surface? I could sand it down, but that would reduce it's size. I would rather build it back up and smooth it out. Any suggestions from the old guys who restore stuff? This is about what it would have looked like if it hadn't been buried for 50 years.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I say find a bit more iron, build a furnace, melt it down and re-cast it... it'll probably have about the same amount of "antique value" as if you welded all over it with something.Visit Tensaiteki.com
Reply:Don't care about value. Just a decoration. But it would look good on her stove. I don't have room for a furnace. I gave away a $300.00 solvent parts washer with pump and 50gallon reservoir because I didn't have room in my garage. I am storing my tablesaw outside right now just for the space.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:You might need to rent a storage shed as your back yard is full of water. The iron would make a good door stop.  If you look around, you can find them all over the place.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Yeah, I know a guy with a three car garage and he is WASTING it parking vehicles in there!!!! What a dumbazz. His backyard has water in it too. He just has more yard. You would think he would offer to store all my "out of season" stuff in his garage.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Is the stove used ever? If it is just for looks and never will get heated or moved around much just bondo the pits and paint it.
Reply:Park a car in a garage?  c,mon.
Reply:To bad your not around here. They are a dime a dozen at the swap'n shop and junk stores.Maybe easier to build a replica than fix up that one. But if you're set on a referb, electrolysis would be a good start for cleaning. Maybe torch and some brazing rod to fill?200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:Yep. I will try some brazing rod and tig it in. It isn't about having an antique iron. It's about making something I found into a conversation piece. Sure, I bought that iron at a swap meet. But, my brother in law found that in the desert and knew I had a woodburning stove it would look good on sounds better to me. For all I know, she will think it's trash and throw it away. But I will get some time under the hood. That's good enough for me. Just to learn something new. Let's see how it goes. I will post up.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:He does waste a lot  of that big garage... for my money he should send the lathe and mill over to my place. I will shove some stuff around and make room.  Then he could keep the old vanette inside too. No, sorry i'm full... just answering in advance if U R thinkin' of my barn.  We once found a huge srtamping mill on the backside of the Kofas.  probably weighted 20 tons... I got NO idea how they got it back in where it sat. I wanted to get up a party and gear and go get it... I'm older and wiser now. enjoy, bI liked the idea of bondo and black paint but it is pretty hard to weld bondo.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
