Sorry for the crappy blackberry pics.  I don't have a digital camera.  Maybe you guys can still tell if the welds look okay?  I got it a lot closer to square than I expected.  I tacked it in place first and then I welded both joints towards the corner.  I didn't weld the inside.  I did the welds with my AC-225-S at 75 amps with Lincoln 3/32 6011 electrode.  The metal is 1/4" angle generously donated to me by my local scrap yard.  I made the cuts with my HF chop saw with a Norton blade.  Let me know what you think. Reply:Your angle looks nice, If I may,  with the 6011 electrode run about 95 - 100 Amps on DC+.  Your chevrons will group together nicer, like a roll of coins.  Looks good though. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Well your weld is squiggly wiggly and lumpy, but you could see that. Yes it is square, if that was the mission then you succeeded.    If the mission was to make an acceptable weld then you failed.Last edited by Fat Bastard; 08-08-2011 at 05:18 PM.
Reply:Look at pic #2. It didn't penetrate all the way so why not weld the other side to make it super strong?I'm still a n00b so bear with me.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Jeeze FB, go easy on him, hes new at this, and at one time, so were you. To the OP: For a first try, not bad at all. Its square, and you were consistent in your forward and reverse movements. I think you should crank it up a notch, and work on bringing your ripples closer together and going in a straight line. Which isnt always easy to do when the smoke starts rolling and the joint has a tight fitup. Happy Welding [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:A couple comments,  You got a good clean base. That is a plus.  You kept it square. That is a plus.here is you homework.  put a space in your joint and turn up your heat.  slow down and watch the weld puddle as it penetrates.  I would weld inside joints first so as not to trap slag.  then I would grind out the slag from the outside and then weld the outside joints.  Only then are you assured a full penetration weld.  don't worry about FB, He will always tell how it is.  I like that.  don't get caught up in the trap of hoorahs.  too many newbies want kudos for mediocrity and they form a group of folks that will applaud "code welds" made with an extension cord, plugged into a toaster oven, made in china, and welded with every known welding rod with and without preheat.
Reply:If your machine will only run AC, I would reccamend some 6013 Rods, Run them at 100 Amps, it will come out slicker than snot on a door knob, use no movement, just a slow and steady pull. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."

Reply:Sometimes when people start out they use too dark of a welding lens and cannot see where they are welding.  I has given a helmet that had a 13 lens and I could not weld a straight line to save my life when I started out.  I switched to a #9 and that was better, and then found a #10 was right for me.  It provided the right amount of darkness and allowed me the ability to see what I was doing.  If for some reason I can't see where I am welding I will use soap stone and mark where I need to weld.
Reply:Nice square right angle. As for the weld, sure it may not be the best, but thats what practice is all about. Just get more scrap, and lay bead after bead until you acheive the quality your looking for. Don't be discouraged by some of the negative comments, they are only meant to give you insight. You'll get better as time goes along. Everyone on this board was a beginner at some point, and there is a wealth of knowledge to be had by asking questions.
