My poor old neck just can't take the weight of a welding hood on top of a hard hat, so I want to try and make me one that I can wear under my hard hat, like a flip up cutting goggle with some type of shield attached to block the light from my face.I thought about using cardboard like they do for really tight spot homemade hoods, but I'd like it to be sturdier than that. I need to figure out a way to get some portion of a regular hood attached to a headgear that will fit under a hard hat.I've considered a headgear from one of those 3M half face respirators, if I can find some way to attach that to the goggles, I believe I have some pretty good plastic epoxy type stuff that I can glue the hood and goggles together with.I just thought I'd throw this out there and see if anybody had any thoughts, seeing as how my polarity tester thread worked out so well, thanks Insaneride!
Reply:Is this for jobsite use?
Reply:I'd make the 'hood' part out of very thin gauge aluminum, and rivet it together with solid rivets...but that's generally how I build things...Your goal is to build the shield out of the lightest material possible, which still blocks the light. It doesn't have to be 'solid,' like plastic, cardboard, or metal.  You could also make a mask out of leather...the other acceptable, fire-resistant material.  If you really wanted it to be a bit more rigid, you could make a wire frame (either shaped like a classic welding hood or not), to give it shape and keep it off your face.  You could even just use welding goggles and make yourself a leather 'kerchief.  Then call yourself the Welding Bandit.  There are lots of options...as long as the materials meet your goal of blocking the light to your face. The ESAB GLOBE-ARC welding helmet might also meet your needs.  It is essentially a full-face grinding shield, made with a flip-down welding shield.  I know my face shield is a lot lighter than my welding helmet.kevLast edited by Machine_Punk; 02-09-2013 at 11:47 AM.Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio

Reply:I always wondered if the leather ones were good or not.Let us know what you ended up doing please - I have neck issues with heavy ones too, though I do not ever need to wear hard hats thankfullyThanks,Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:what about a huntsman hood made out of that treated cardboard type material. Reply:I use a Huntsman now, I tried it under my hard hat the other night, I would have to change the headgear out and the part that comes back over the top of your head hits on the hard hat. I haven't tried to put it ON a hard hat, I figured it was too small for that.
Reply:I use a 910 Fiber Metal,no flip up saves quite a bit of weight. You can trim it down some with a zip disc to lighten it up some more.About 6 months ago I got a paper Huntsman. It's the heaviest hood I ever used.Plus it flips down fast and heavy.Using plastic filter plates can save weght but I can't stand them.Last edited by ironrail; 02-10-2013 at 06:32 PM.
Reply:They also make a cardboard type shield for cutting. Jackson I think. That attaches to a grinding shield head gear. I know those can be attached right to a hardhat with the proper hardwareMiller Syncrowave 180Miller 211 w/ spool-gunLincoln Ac/Dc buzzboxCutmaster 38 plasmaVictor,Smith's,and Craftsman (Harris) O/A torches.DeWalt Multi cutterFiber Metal helmets(old school)Enough Snap-On to be a dealer

I had a buddy that used to use a pancake hood under his hard hat, might have to think about that, too.
Reply:What about taking a hard hat adapter for burning goggles, and attach it to a pancake hood?http://www.bettymills.com/shop/produ...referer=searchhttp://www.discountsafetygear.com/fi...Fc6DQgodKTQAHQhttp://wendyspancakes.net/Last edited by CEP; 02-10-2013 at 08:26 PM.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:You could get a bump cap and cut out the sides for the original headgear to go through. Most use this with pipeliner. I've done this but now I use a fibermetal hardhat and cut out the top nylon straps so it fits lower on my head. My hood is also chopped about 1" on the bottom.
Reply:3M Speedglas have models with integrated hard hats. http://www.shop3m.com/70071621620.htmlIf you want to make something yourself you could try to use kydex. It's a thermoplastic so you can heat it and shape it any way you like. You can also drill it and cut it and put rivets in it. It's hard wearing and popular for making custom holsters for knives and guns.Last edited by Pete.S.; 03-24-2013 at 06:00 PM.
