I decided to make a full size bed instead of buying one. Nothing fancy just a simple design, and a fun project. She's excited because now she gets her own room. So far I have $170.00 in materials and nine hours of labor. Still need to sand, prime and paint. All material is 14ga, Attached Images
Reply:Very cool  all welded? or foot and head board bolted.   the feet did you make them?Nice jobDayePound to fit, paint to match
Reply:Thanks tigmusky, and yes they're bolted. I'll take better pics when I get it all painted. The feet and the tops come from kings metals.
Reply:nice. how much does it weigh?

Reply:Very nice design.  I might have gone with slotted side rails (into the head and foot boards) for ease of dismantling and moving.  Looking forward to seeing how it looks painted and in place.Miller Dynasty 200DXMillermatic 210 w/ Spoolmate 3035Hypertherm Powermax 380JD Squared Model 32Multiple fabrication tools & equipmentFull Powder Coating Setup

Reply:Thanks guys, for the compliments. I don't know how much it weighs, but I can figure it out later. My wife just came across another design she likes, and wants me to sell this one and build another one. We'll see!
Reply:Nice work!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:nice looking bed, any plans for matching end tables or anything else?Adam MMorales Ranch
Reply:Nice design! Tell her not to jump on her bed, those post toppers could be nasty to fall onto. But I really like the design! Needs a night/end  table to match! What are you using for paint? Clear or color? I like the metal look. I would use thinner to clean it then clear coat. Or shine it up with a sanding pad on a grinder and clear coat. Edit: I see your priming... so no clear coat lolGood job.Last edited by oxygen454; 02-20-2011 at 04:29 PM.

Reply:I have never personally used hammer finish but I have seen pics of the paint being used and looks great. You will have to post some finished product pics
Reply:Very nice Bed - lot better than commercial optoins and then bragging Rights to go with it.
Reply:Smart if you had somewhere to display you could probably sell them easy. So my sell pitch would be last bed you will ever buy. Nice work I would try to use a little less gauge maybe lighting up the load because that my be a problem with people moving it in the house in  the room.Very niceWe dont build prettyMy Lawyer has me on retainer

Reply:That's a great project! Also agree on the hammered finish Rust-oleum."These instructions are at our present level ofknowledge. Legal requirements do not exist.Technical issues subject to change."_________________________________________Lincoln MIG PAK 180Lincoln AC-225
Reply:Thanks guys for all the feed back, I really appreciate it.dcc432, I thought about using 16ga, but there wasn't much difference in weight and cost, so I figured 14ga would be better. I tend to over build my projects, or what my boss all says "man thats an over kill", but I don't like to get things back for repairs.I'm thinking about making another one and painting it purple and gold (LSU colors) and putting a tigers head on the 4 corner post, with LSU across the head board and Tigers on the foot board. Still trying to put together some numbers.

Reply:Hammertone  paint is easy to use and now they have an all purpose that is good for wood, metal and plastic with no prime according to the can. I used it on cleane bare metal and it looks good, I even painted the corion shelves on the welding cart with it. and it is holding up well The can is different looking and it sprays in all angles even upside down plus it is a trigger in place of the normal tip..
Reply:I love it!  The wife has been shopping for a new bed for one of our guest rooms.  Maybe I'll make one for her.LynyrdAn old redneck who lives out in the woods.

My wife is going to paint it black. She went to Lowe's and came back with rust-oleum hammered finish, never used that finish before, any thoughts about it.ItsAdam1, no end tables but she thinking of a lamp stand or something that might clamp to the bed.

Reply:Oxy, thats a nice bed. I like the way the rails tie in to the head and foot board. I might have to borrow that idea on the next one if its alright with you.MoonRise, thanks for the info on the paint. I was going with a gloss black, but my wife went to get the paint and while looking came across the hammered paint and wants to try it. Crossing my fingers it comes out well. I hear you on the vertical up, Donald, thanks, its a full size.
Reply:I had thought of building a few beds for the kids as well. Never would have thought of the fancy tops though, Great job!

Reply:Originally Posted by MoonRisecajun,The RustOleum hammered finish paint is nice in that it gives a 'textured' finish, so it is very forgiving of slight 'texture' in your project.  :  If that is the look you are going for.It is NOT the correct paint if you are going for a completely smooth finish. That said, it has some pretty strong/nasty solvent(s) in it (xylene IIRC), so you MUST apply it outdoors or in an area with GOOD ventilation.  Prelim set-up time is pretty quick for a 'home' paint, but it takes a while for full dry/cure time.Like all paint, proper prep of your surfaces is important to a good paint job.  The hammered-finish mostly lets you off from totally smoothing the surface before painting, but you still have to clean and prep the surfaces.btw, nice job on the bed.  I generally say or suggest to run vertical beads vertical-UP to help ensure proper weld penetration (especially with MIG which is notorius for letting one make 'surface' welds which look OK but are just sitting on the surface of the metal aka cold-lap aka inadequate penetration/fusion )

Reply:Sweet build. Glad my wife is not looking over my shoulder when I'm reading this. She would say OMG build me one. We are on our way to being farmers! Our site is always under construction so check back often for updates.  http://www.philosophyfarmstyle.com/
Reply:First off, I like the design of the bed. I think it looks good. As for the hammered finishes from Rustoleum, i've never had much luck with them. I've used the stuff trying to restore small toolboxes & it will turn out hammered in one spot & smooth in another. Maybe the surface should be blasted first with some type of media. Rustoleum has a new paint that's supposed to replicate the look of stainless steel that I used on a TV stand I made a while back. Gives it kind of a contemporary look.
Reply:Originally Posted by MoonRiseIn my defense, I did say :and I missed the original statement that he was using 14 gauge material.  That said, I -have- seen 'metal caulking bubble-gum' done by racing an attempted bead downhill on sheetmetal guage steel.  0.023/0.025 wire with C25 (or Dog-forbid using straight argon on steel by mistake or on purpose) and have the parameters set 'light' (low on the voltage and low on the WFS) and then run fast downhill and you too can put a bead on TOP of the 14-16 guage steel with little to no fusion/penetration.  Let's see, 0.023/0.025 wire at 100 ipm WFS and 15V with C25 is ~ 35 amps.  Run that downhill at a 'fast' 20 ipm and you get ~ 1/2 -1/3 the 'recommended' amperage of 100 amps for a downhill fillet or butt weld on 14 guage steel (recommended parameters of 0.030 wire at 225 ipm WFS and 18V with C25 for ~100 amps at 20 ipm travel speed).
Reply:very cool bed. Ive also built a few beds. I clear coat the steel on all my frames. Most of these are pretty old design. 2-4 years ago.not my design, lol
