Anyone have experience with this??  Just curious as I have to try to do a longseam fusion weld on a decent sized (.125 x 6 x 32" approx) cylinder of said material and it is one I have no experience with. The customer who does  a lot of advanced stuff doesn`t have any experience welding it either. All we know is it had to be done yesterday and a small fusion weld I did on a test section came out surprisingly well. It seemed ductile and even under a microscope showed no signs of fracture. He gave me the go ahead to do the whole seam on one of these. Obviously it is not a super critical application otherwise it would not be done like this but with the time restraints on getting wire since it is mid holiday week, it is more important to try to get it done than to wait on wire. I do know I would be better off with filler since it is crack sensitive but I`m curious if fusion welding is done in industry with this alloy at all?? Honestly if someone had told me it was stainless steel I would have believed them...except it seemed a little dirty/muddy.Anyone????
Reply:I don't know what hastelloy is, but if it's stellite of any kind, it needs to be pre-heated & post-heated with a ramp-down or it will crack due to rapid heating and cooling."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.

Reply:Hey man.. welded alot of retainer rings out of hast x and its not as tricky as you are making it out to be... wire would be good but drag your puddle back from your end and it wont crack..good luckAir vantage 500 on the 08' KWharris torchesl25 pro suitcasecomletely restored 1969 SA200 redfaceon my 08' duramaxPIMPN AINT EASY
Reply:Sorry if I wasted your time. I never attempted welding anything high in nickel (that I know of), but as far as the chromium, you already know, that is an element of stainless. Hopefully someone here has the answer. I know I already posted this link, but consider asking this guy. Click on the "Contact Us" button and ask your question. He will have an answer. http://www.welding-advisers.com/Welding-arc.html Best of luck.
Reply:No worries papabear. Don`t get me wrong.  Thanks for chiming in....but you know how before you know it threads can get out of hand and everyone that has an opinion is throwing in their .02  I was really looking to see if anyone could tell me from experience if this sounded stupid..or as KChoate pointed out,   I may be making a big deal out of nothing. Thanks for the link. I think I saw you post that somewhere else.   I`m gonna go ahead and give it a shot. It seemed ok on the little test I did and the customer told me to go for it....but the cylinder seam is more restrained than the short 1" test ring so I figured some more opinions may be good...I don`t like scrapping parts.Last edited by BrianNye Welding guy; 12-23-2009 at 11:55 PM.
Reply:Hastelloy welds really well, similar to higher grade SS alloys. Follow the same procedures you would for Sanitary or critical app SS procedures and you will be fine.
Reply:Yes thanks....I completed the first part of the project the other day.     It welded surprisingly well for no filler.   I`ve had more problems with grades of ss such as 316L than I encountered with the Hast X.  Filler would have been nice but not necessary I found out. That is good since I wanted to get paid on that one.
