I want to build the following gate pictured below and before i start i was hoping the forum would be able to tell me if this is appropriately designed. I will put some finials and decorative stuff on that the wife wants, but i am more concerned about the big picture here.-The post the gate would hang from is 3" x 1/4. Already in ground. 4 ft deep.-There is a 3" extension from the post made from 1-1/4" x 3/16" square tubing-The "rectangular" gate section is 1-1/4" x 1/16" square tubing-The pickets are 3/4" x 1/16"-The gate is 60" H x 72" W-The hinges are Ball Bearing - Steel - 5" L x 1 3/4" W with grease fittingI appreciate any feedback comments you guys/gals can offer. Thanks.
Reply:The only change I would make is on the 1.25"x1/16" square tube on the perimeter, I would switch to .120 wall thickness or thicker. It's much easier to work with, the thin stuff warps too easy.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools

Reply:Thanks.Do you think 3/16" all the way around would add to much weight? .120 is the same or close to  1/8".I Have plenty of 3/16" laying around but i was concerned the gate would way to much with that and was trying to lighten it up.
Reply:yes, .12 = 1/83/16 I think would be overkill. as for the weight, it's only dependent on the hinges, and the way the hinges are attached. If the hinges can handle the load, than no it's not to much weight. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:The weight difference from using 1.25x.188 vs. 1.25x.065 would be about 34 pounds.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:And don't forget to alternate welding in the pickets. If you weld all one side, the gate will dish. Also, if the hinges are the weld on , bullet/torpedo type, put the half with the stem (male) one the bottom. If the female one is on the bottom, it may catch moisture.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:fabricat the gate frame first, then cut your pickets to size. You can weld your pickets straight down the line. all the top then all the bottom. then flip the gate over immediately and weld the other side and the heat will keep the gate straight. then weld the hinge post on and then set your latch last.
