I have this old hand crank kitchen suction pump (think the Rifleman) that's used for lawn art. I believe that its cast iron. It took a fall and some of the tabs broke. How do you weld cast iron with a mig? What do I need to look out for? ANY INSITE would be great!!HF 180 amp/240 volt Mig (cap mod)1987 Harley FLHTP (project)1990 F350 XLT Lariat S/C dually1990 S&S 11SC Cabover Camper2011 Ford Ranger S/C XLT
Reply:You don't..i don't think they make Ni wirebut you can get Ni rod or braze it ..Cast iron is very temperamental about heat preheat / during welding and post heatThere a lot of posts about welding cast ironBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Then again, if its just "lawn art," you might hit it with a torch to around 300*F then try tack welds with the mig to fix the tabs. Even if there is a slight crack from rapid cooling, so what right? It's just "lawn art." Reply:I'd just braze it.
Reply:The small mapp torches come in handy for stuff like this. You can use it to heat up the pump and then go ahead a weld it up. Bury it in some sand to slow the cooling process. You won't be able to braze with it but they're not expensive and as I said pretty handy when you need some heat.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Put it in the gas grill to heat it as hot as possible (mine tops out over 500 degrees), then mig it with your 70 series wire. keep it hot by doing short welds. Then leave it in there after welding to cool 50 to 100 degrees at a time.Next day, clean it up and I think for yard art, you will find it satisfactory!

Reply:I'd braze it if I were you or have someone do it. Cast is difficult as noted. Also if you just tack it you will have a crack that lets in moisture and a place to rust. Brazing will fill that.
