Sorry but these are the only pics I have and the tank is still 120 miles away as I didn't have room on the back of my truck to bring it home with me.  Basically I am wanting to know if the silver looking parts which is under the outer paing is galvanizing.  I don't think it is but I figured somebody on here would know better than I do.  I was under the impression it's not galvanized due to the fact that it is rusting and the silver layer seems more like a paint coating than hot dipped.  The tanks at my cousins shop and he owns a fence company and does a lot of work with galvanized parts and also said it wasn't galvanizing.  Thanks for any help.
Reply:Doesn't look galvanized to me. Zinc isn't too bad if you hold your breath.

Reply:Sounds good, my main concern is this tank is going to be used in a smoker project and I've heard it's a real no no to use a galvanized tank for a cooker.  I was worried it might be galvanized since it was used in a very large boiler system and I am pretty sure it had water in it.  The holding tank in the well at my farm has a rather large tank that is galvanized, being this tank had water in it made me think twice and want to make sure.
Reply:It doesn't look galvanized, nor zinc electroplated (there is a difference in technical terms).  Either way, if that was zinc, you'd see not only red rust, but you'd see some "layers" of "white rust."  WR is zinc sacrificing itself before "red rust" sets into the base metal.  That's the purpose of zinc coatings in the first place.  The WR is basically zinc hydroxide  and "corroding," before the harmful "red rust" oxidation process starts on the base metal.   Its like a white/blueish powdery substance on the surface of the zinc.  When  you see real "red rust," the zinc is already gone and real damage now sets in. That's why we hot dip galvanize and electroplate (or even prime and paint) steel.  To prolong the life of the base metal substrate.  So, not seeing any WR in the pics and being in the metal finishing business myself, I'd concur with what the others have already said.  Looks like paint.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:One more thing.  If the tank was used as a boiler, any zinc coating on the inside of that tank would be totally corroded.  Zinc and continuous water contact doesn't last long at all.  I say, enjoy your future smoker.  Just be damn careful cutting into it and make sure it's empty of any flammables and gasses.   I'm sure you've researched that aspect of utilizing, cutting and welding old tanks.
