i have a hobart handler 120 mig . a chart on the inside of the door say's c-25 is the gas to use for stainless steel. i have read that will work but not to use it .the more posts i read on the internet one say's use this and the next say's use that, now kind of confused.i have done mild steel in my garage for years with no problems.i have used a tig welder to make steel battery box's and they turned out great . this will be the first stainless i will be doing.i am welding 304 stainless steel.16 gauge headers.i have the 308 wire .025.i have a tank of c-25 or i can borrow a tank of 100 % argon.or should i rent a new tank of ?or would 100% argon work with a tig.at work they use a tig with 100% argon for aluminum and i can use that tig.i don't want to make these headers rust. and when i put them on i don't want to take them back off to fix them because i used the wrong gas and the installation of these headers is a 4 - 7 hour pain.thanks for any helptim
Reply:100% argon is what you want for the tig, not for the mig.You can weld stainless with 75/25, but it isn't proper, you give up some of the corrosion resistance properties of the stainless in the welded area and the weld can be subject to cracking as well. Proper gas to use for short circuit mig stainless is tri-mix. Ask your welding gas supplier for a stainless tri-mix mig gas and they will know just what you're talking about.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op |
