I work in a melt shop at a steel mill that produces 52100 bearing grade steel. The question I have is about prepping a 14,000 lb 52100 ingot for Vacuum Arc Remelting. The problem I am having is welding the 1045 grade 9" diameter stub to the top of the ingot. The ingot basically becomes an electrode when placed inside the furnace. It hangs from this 9" stub. We have had two failures on the two we have tried. The stub has broken off at the weld during remelting. We weld the stub to the top of the ingot using 309 3/32 flux cored wire at 32 volts. Ingot is preheated prior to welding. We normally run a ton of 15-5 stainless in our VAR furnaces and have been welding with this wire to join the 1045 stub and 15-5 ingot with no failures.
