Goodmorning, everyone! So, as you know, Im planning on building a trailer BBQ in the very near future. I recently asked about converting a boat trailer (thanks for the feedback, BTW)But I've since gotten another idea.A buddy of mine bought an old S10 as a project truck last winter... He's since gotten a full time job, doesn't have much time, and the trucks a little worse than he thought... Long story short, he's going to pull a few things off it he wants, and scrap the rest. And because of this, I could get an S10 rear axle, leaf springs, and two almost new tires with aluminum wheels for next to nothing...And It's really tempting. Its cheaper than, and stronger than, a big-box-store trailer axle and wheels.I've thought about how I'd make this work, its going to be a small, single axle trailer and probably won't have brakes... I expect the finished product will only weigh around 500 pounds.Looking at the trucks frame, I'd probably have to "arch" the trailer frame so that it would curve up, like how a trucks frame is higher under the bed and rear end, than the cab, but I could work my design around that very easily. Maybe I could even convert it to trailer leaf springs and then NOT arch the frame. I know this might be a dumb question, but I just thought I'd ask. It'll be my first trailer project, and I'm sure I can;t be the first person to wonder if this will work. Thanks in advance [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Too heavy and too much trouble.  Get some square tubing, axles,  and a set of springs.  You must have a trailer part place somewhere close by.  This is one good source, but Northern Tool or a Tractor Supply should have everything you need..http://www.championtrailers.com/

Reply:I don't like using semi floating axles for trailers as it costs fuel economy for the extra rotating mass and potential of bearings going bad without being able to hear it and an axle sliding out.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools

Reply:Okay, thanks guys!Idk, maybe it's not ideal but it would be unique and save myself and this the buyer a lot of money. Is it gonna "hurt" anything? I'm told I could clean the pumpkin out and reduce drag that way. This is something that's probably gonna be pulled to local football games, not cross country, so I'm honestly not thinking milage is gonna be a huge deal here...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:You can have brakes on it too, if you like.  All you need do is to get a hydraulic surge brake hitch assembly for the tongue and you're good.Point of aggravation with surge brakes is that you have to "pin the hitch" to disable the brakes if you are trying to back the trailer up an incline. As to the difference in height of frames:  I made a utility trailer out of a Chevrolet Luv (circa 1980 or so) back in the early '90s and to deal with that issue I chopped the Luv frame off right where it began to bend downward and used some 3" X 4" boxed channel (salvaged from a commercial car haul semi trailer) to form the tongue structure.I used a piece of 3" X 3" boxed channel to make the mount for a hydraulic surge brake.  Plumbed the surge brake into the OEM Luv brake line.I used this trailer to haul field stone for a masonry project where I lived at the time.  I had several friends (and their neighbors) who let me gather rocks on their properties.Pinning the surge brake to back up turned out to be a PITA because out on the paths and trails of off road, even a slight dip can activate the brake when backing, even if it ain't "uphill".So I developed an "automatic brake defeater" out of junk I had lying around. The key element in my package was a small air cylinder that formerly operated the engine lever on a Detroit Diesel 6V92 engine.I rigged up linkage with a pin that would push into the brake defeat holes of the surge brake (hole are OEM feature) slider frame.I used a 12V solenoid valve to apply air to the cylinder on demand.I wired the solenoid valve to be controlled by the back up lamp circuit of my Nissan pickup which towed the trailer.I used the 7th (blue) wire of the 7 pin lights cord to carry the back up lamp signal.I decided that having gone that far I would go ahead and make the trailer back up lamps functional too.  Not wanting to impose all the extra electrical load on the nismo OEM back up light switch, I made up a dedicated circuit with a Bosch relay to actually carry the back up lights and solenoid valve electric load of the trailer.  Relay was controlled by wiring it into the Nismo OEM back up lamp circuit. For an air supply, I took a length of 4" X 4" boxed channel (cut to fit between the Luv frame rails) and welded plates onto the ends to close it up. The plates extended on 1 side of the channel to form a hanger for attaching to the trailer frame. I drilled and tapped (1/8" NPT) a port in the bottom of the channel and installed a drain petcock so the tank could be emptied of any water I might get from uncertain (gas station) fillups made away from home (never saw any water come out in 15 years of use).  I drilled and tapped (1/8" NPT) a port in the front side of the channel for a brass tee in which I included a Schrader valve for filling the tank.  The other end of the tee I installed a manual shutoff valve which I plumbed with 1/4 NTA plastic tubing leading to the solenoid air valve. From the solenoid valve I ran the same NTA tubing to the air cylinder. The operation of the brake over rule system went like this.Selecting reverse in the Nissan would activate the relay which would open the solenoid valve and apply tank air pressure to the air cylinder. When the cylinder was fed, it would extend and insert a pin into the brake over rule holes provided by the surge brake OEM.I tested the system to see how long my air supply would function and it made 96 applications before the reservoir pressure would not move the pin into engagement.I used the trailer for 15 years before selling it.  I removed my automatic brake defeat system before I sold it as I did not relish the thought that somebody might one day show up at my door with a subpoena because something happened and the over rule pin failed to retract causing the trailer to be "brakeless". Or more likely, to be wrongly "accused of" that.
Reply:really? people use the back half of pickups as utility trailers all the time. Though, most just use the frame of the truck as the frame for the trailer. but there are some down falls you need to pay attention too. 1, you need to keep fluid in that axle where as a regular trailer axle you just need to keep them greased. 2. the rased pinion housing will effect the height of the trailer/smoker/BBQ placement. 3. spring perches may not be where you want/need them. You can move/remove the old perches, or just add new ones on top to eliminate the need to arch your frame and the need to get different springs. but again, this raises the height of the whole build. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Some of the later s10s have one piece sealed bearing hubs up front. It would be better just to stick those on some square tubing and you could still use the rear leaf springs if you wanted.
Reply:You could use the axle but take the ring and pinion OUT and then make a piece of tubing that slides over the axle shafts and you can connect the axle shafts to each other after you drill and tap set screw holes 90 degrees apart...Then just make a plate to cover up where the carrier goes..You would not want to weld the tube to the axles just in case someone has to replace a bearing.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 05-07-2013 at 03:29 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:There were inner bearings on the carrier of my old S-10. so just remove the ring gear, and put everything else back in. Leave the pinion gear as it will seal the front of the differential. and use the stock cover as there is still a rotating mass inside there. They are held in my C clips so you shouldn't need a tube. as discribed by Zap. leave the carrier gears loose (open/non-welded) to keep the tires from skipping/chirping around corners. There are no problems. Reply:Way I look at it, I'm building a utility trailer right now myself.Truck axle: Belongs on a truck.Trailer axle: Belongs on a trailer.
Reply:Trailer axles are cheap, so are the bearings. The first time you buy automotive bearings for it your S10 axle you will have almost paid for a trailer axle. On another though thought, it's a BBQ, how much road travel is it really going to get?  If it is just around the neighborhood than go for it. If its less than that, heck put your kids rollerblades on it!
Reply:If its 2wd mount the front spindles in some tube and use the leafs from the back end. If not just pull out the gears and your good to go.

Reply:You people are not OLD Country Folks obviously!People have been taking rear ends/frames of trucks, leaving the bed on to use as trailers for years!Don't re-invent the wheel, just cut the frame, bend it, put your favorite hitch on.Mount the BBQ and get grilling!
Reply:For utility trailers you can really get in trouble using a car axle. I have seen many for sale with straight axles off foreign cars. The weight rating is no where near a trailer axle.

Reply:Keep the axle as-is.  No need to take anything out.  Not that much drag anyhow.  Besides, the lubricant is thrown/splashed to the ends of the axle tubes by the rotating gears.  You need the gears spinning to lube the axle bearings with the splashed oil, which collects in the ends.  (look where the fill plug is, it's BELOW the axle ends)Make the frame to fit the springs.  Not that big a deal really.  You'll maybe sit high a bit, but easy to do.  Remember you'll probably have utility boxes hanging down anyhow, so it won't seem so high.  Only the cooking surface has to be at a reasonable height, the rest can be sorta funky.Be a good project to hone your fabricating skills.  And for God's Sake........stick weld it.  And set the axles as far back as feasible, I've seen the truck bed trailers, and they suck going down the road....lottsa sway"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I've read all this and I am a little perplexed.. so its a bad thing that I have a 1954 truck bed/axle (complete back end of a truck) as a pickup bed trailer that I have ran up and down the interstate at 75mph 100's of miles at a time without any squealing, jerking, or any problems? The rear axle of course gets the same maintenance as any rear axle is supposed to get.. proper lube, etc. What's wrong again? It trails so nicely. Most of my friends and acquaintances comment on how nice it trails. They want one just like it?
Reply:You could cut the front spindles off and weld them to a pipe for the axle or pull the pinion out of the rearend. Otherwise let her spin. Lots of pickup bed trailers still have the guts in them. Just get her done. Dont overthink it.
