I hope no one on this site made this repair. Sense I have no idea who made this repair I see no harm in putting it up for comment. This repair was on a used John Deere chisel plow purchased by a neighbor. He asked if I could fix the cracks and I could not believe my eyes when I saw this. No joint prep was done because the cracks were right under the welds I ground off. No slag removed between passes, Cold welds. I ground off this mess and ground out the cracks so I would get 100% penetration. I used 1/8", 6010 5P+ for the root then filled out with 3/32", 7018 grinding out between each pass. Not my best work but it will hold.If there is a Stickey for weld hall of shame this one needs to be added.Dan Attached Images

Reply:If you do much farm equipment repair you will see this stuff a lot, and I mean a lot. On one project, after cutting off all the pieces of metal some one used for gussets and fish plates and then just welding it out right, the farmer commented that my weld probably wouldn't hold as I didn't put all the crap pieces back like the other guy had. I always tell them if it breaks I will repair it for nothing. I've never had to do it even once.

Reply:Ya that looks like a lot of the repairs that go on around here. A bunch of these farmers do there own repairs and they tend to not hold up very long. I had to repair a plow last week for an older man, he hit a fence and tore it up pretty good. I managed to get it all put back together.Lincoln 225 RangerSa200 01 dodge 3500 welding rig
Reply:A lot of farmers think if they add enough extra pieces to a repair job it will be stronger than the original. When I worked for a farm in Idaho I kept a scarfing tip in the service truck to cut all the excess crap off and start over. Reply:OMG. When my dad taught me to weld he said one of the most important things to help get a good weld was to get in a comfortable position before you start. That being said this guy got so comfortable before he started welding that he might have gone comatose once he began.
Reply:This reminds me of a show on "Food Network".."In front of you is rusted broken farm equipment..Small hand grinder with a worn out disc..Crappy metal for repairs..Dozens of welding rods..An underpowered machine""You have 30 mins to complete the repair and the clock starts now"Unfortunately you have been CHOPPED!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:When an older man brings me his equipment to weld on I quit commenting on the welds. Many of them as ugly as they were and are, held and did the job (miracle as it may be). I have also know many a man to blame his own globbing and dobbing on a "friend" or "another welder". I laugh and say something about it being ugly, but it held while it lasted. and then laugh a little with him. I then fix the problem and then prod him not to tell who welded new repairs as ugly as they are (they usually aren't ugly and always more pretty than the original). I tell him if they break, call me and the repair is on me; unless it breaks from destructive abuse. I haven't had a call back. When I didn't High Horse and blast the other guy's welding to shreds, I found I got more business. Some guys are embarrassed they don't know how to weld and they do the best they could do. They add enough metal to get the job done and only the cows will see it most of the time. When I finally breaks and the guy doesn't have time or is frustrated with it he then call on me or one of you.I get a lot of calls for welding fixes from those old men now before they glob it all up. just foo for thought.oh yeah that original job was ugly!! good repair.
Reply:good "bedside manner" is always helpful in a business. not matter what you do. If you offend the customer, they aren't going to come back, no matter how good of a job you do. we jest a lot in our anonimity online. But when you're face to face with someone who knows something wasn't done right and is more than likely imbarased by either the work they did, or the work they had someone else do. Than it's never a good idea to rub it in their face. I've found that most people in a trade are not the typical lay down and take in personalities. so they like to toot their own horn. And typically that can get out of hand, especially when it's with a customer instead of a coworker. Just remember, someone who has a good experience at a business might come back, and might tell 1 or 2 people about it. But someone who has a bad experience will tell everyone they know, who will in turn tell everyone they know. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:I grew up on a farm and ranch, I remember watching dad repair farm equipment using a carbon arc torch hooked to a 195 amp forney welder. When I was about 11 Dad had me take over the welding on the farm. Didn't take long for the neighbors to start bringing over their stuff to fix. By the time I got through FFA and 2 years of College Welding I started to notice how bad the welds were that I had done as a preteen. Mind you they were still better than the neighbors welds. At this point I have been welding for over 45 years as things need fixed. I know a lot of self taught welders who tried to use just one more rod than last time. My uncle would always bring over another piece of metal to lay across my welds because mine were not deep enough to hold. He couldn't tell the difference between a built up weld after notching the metal compared to a cold weld laid across slag., Neighbors Gotta Love em
Reply:It's not just "oldIt's not only old men that make messes out of welding. I've seen plenty of young guys dob up stuff too.
Reply:What really fires me up is when the welder looks at me and says "it may not look good but it will hold" That is when I get his check.
