Hi all:Have a question about welding stainless with a mig. I cannot get the proper cover gas affordably here locally. Could I use my CO2 argon mix?Brian
Reply:SS Mig would need at least argon and 02 if not a tri-mix gas has been a few threads on this topic try using the search featureidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441

Reply:It depends what argon/co2 mix you've got. If it's got more than 5% co2 then it'll work, but not that well, 2.5% co2 is ideal.
Reply:Hey Brian,You will need a mix of LESS than 5% CO2, not more as Baila suggested that would work. I use C2(98/Ar-2/CO2) for my SS repairs & light SS welding...... & that mix doesn't produce a "dull" bead. Besides, a dull bead can easily be rectified with a SS wire wheel quite nicely.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:You could always switch to a dual shield stainless wire(flux core) that runs with Ar 75/C 25.

Reply:What are you welding and how good looking weld do you want? I've used straight argon with my mig welder (before I got my TIG).

Reply:I was givin a 4' x 2' piece of 3/8" thick SS plate to make a flat top griddle for my hotdog cart. I need to weld back and side splash guards on it as well as locating tabs and a grease trap. I will keep looking for the tri mixG. |
