Reply:I like Smith and its still made here, in the US. They sell an all in one sort of affair in which the complete rig comes in a toolbox. ETA: I own a Smith propane rig I use for heating, cutting and brazing.

Reply:I have Victor stuff, but I hear a lot of great reports about the Horror Fright stuff. If I was going to do it again, I think I would either buy used Victor/Smith/Harris/whatever or new Horror Fright. Supposedly it's all interchangeable with Victor...a straight knockoff for a small fraction of the price.
Reply:I have the smith kit. It replaced an ancient victor torch on our farm. The victor was a great torch, but was oversized for what I needed and was cutting only. The smith kit was a good buy for cutting, heating, and welding when I bought it nearly 10 years ago. I'd buy it again.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A

Reply:One recommendation is the Victor Performer torch kits. They have the medium 100FC handle with built in flashback arrestors & check valves and the CA1350 cutting attachment. Reply:Unless you get a huge Acetylene tank, you will be somewhat limited on tip size, especially for welding and heating with a rosebud. I wish we had gotten the propane kit and just added the few acet tips we needed and a reg. Buying a propane heating tip separately is costly, not so with the kit."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder |
