dont know the actual term for the thing...  from what i remember, its a brown scotch brite pad wrapped around the mig wire before it enters the drive mechanism and either zip tied or wire tied to the wire.... i took a pic of my drive mechanism and posted it in a couple other posts and realized i didnt have one..  i guess i could just take a piece of clean scotch brite pad and just zip tie it on the wire..that'll work, wont it? Reply:You dont need the scotch brite, you can just use a clean rag---and I use a clothes pin on mine..
Reply:hey thanks.. clothes pins a good idea... saves from wasting a ziptie anyways.. have to go nab one from the neighbor i guess..think i might use the fine scotchbrite or some felt if i can find a piece..Last edited by brucer; 11-20-2010 at 08:48 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:The idea is that you lengthen the life of your lining by not sending in crap that the wire has picked up.  Most people don't use them.I use one of these.  Click on the picture for more information.  I got it from http://weldingsupply.comLast edited by Jack Olsen; 11-22-2010 at 12:19 AM.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:That does look like rust particles in the picture.  Our local rep once told me the wiper was great for getting dust particles off of the wire, but not to expect any positive results other than longer liner life.  In other words, it's strictly a dust mop for your wire and not a corrosion "repair."  Depending on the extent of rust, your patience, and the size of your trash can, it's sometimes possible to unspool enough wire to get to the clean stuff again without tossing the whole roll.  Obviously I'm not advocating doing this for wire that will be used for code-type work.
Reply:Just be aware that with some better quality wires, they can actually be detrimental.  Various types of MIG wire actually come with a drawing lube on them that contains arc stabilizers, and to an extent may actually increase liner life.
