So im doing some repair to a parking garage.Stitch Welding  C15x40 onto the web of existing I beams.I used 7018 for most of the job but the top welds are only 3-1/2"  from the ceiling making stick welding difficultI have a suitcase that I run .068 NR-211 which is only rated up to 1/2"The C15x40 is over 1/2" thick My question is can I do a multi pass to make up for it?Cody WernerFABCONwww.fabconwelds.com

Reply:Short answer - Nope.  Can't use NR211 for that.  As you know, the max thickness rating for NR211 is 1/2 inch thick workpiece MAX (in the 'big' wires, wires 0.045 and smaller have a workpiece thickness limit of 5/16 inch MAX).  Doesn't matter how many passes you pile up, not supposed to use that wire on work thicker than the stated limits. You'll have to use a different wire.Does the job spec call out any electrode specs or Code requirements?  Do you have to meet D1.1 or D1.8 requirements?Do you need to meet a CVN spec on the filler/electrode?  If so, the Hobart Fabshield 21B will not be an appropriate filler/electrode as it is not CVN rated.Do you 'need' FCAW-S, or can you go to FCAW-G (aka dualshield)? There are many wires than could be used, and many more that are not appropriate. If  there is only 3-1/2" clearance on top of the steel, how do you plan on getting a wire-feed torch in there?  Maybe better to just bend up a bunch of 7018 sticks and use them that way (just more 'stub' loss from the bent electrodes not reaching in/up/over/around things).  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Hello FABCON, as moonrise stated, you will need a seismic rated wire or a wire without thickness limitations. Some examples: ESAB Coreshield 8, Lincoln NR232 or 233, Hobart Fabshield XLR-8. These wires will work for your job and meet any required CVN's or other requirements. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Do you guys on the east coast see a lot of seismic codes, like FEMA 267, 288, 353?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Hello CEP, I believe that we are somewhat unique in the siesmic realm on our side of the states. I have been led to understand that the entire West coast is governed by seismic restrictions and that Denver also has those considerations. Certainly not all of the states have been affected as we have. Yet, where multi-pass applications of self-shielded wires go incorrect applications of particular wires will result in weld failures due simply to the chemistry of the wires. That's just a bit of what I have been led to understand. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:If I remember correctly 21-B has a 3/4-inch thickness limitations. Back before the North Ridge earth quake these manufactures didn't put thickness limitations on their wires. We all got an education thanks to that one earth quake.http://www.hobartbrothers.com/produc...d%26reg%3B+21BDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Absolutely, that was a game changer Cep. and definitely not to make it any easier. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Current NJ building codes do have some seismic provisions, but wide-scale retrofit of existing buildings is not currently a requirement.Rehab of a builing (for other purposes not directly seismic-related), may trigger requirements for seismic retrofit though. At the very least and absent any other engineering or Code requirements, I'd use a filler with CVN properties No Matter What.   (because of FEMA 353 and AWS D1.8, and never-ever want to be in the position to have to 'justify' why I used a non-CVN rated filler when CVN rated fillers are available.)At a minimum, it looks like curent NJ Code (based on the 2006 IBC) requires structural steel work to be done in accordance with AWS D1.1.Got your WPS all in order?     The best laid schemes ... Reply:What are you using for a power source, Welder. Do you have CV as that can limit what will run good for the job as well. Says you are using mainly stick.    Early 80's we were qualifying for DOT bridge work in CT, Test would go fine but NR 211 on 1" unlimited vertical and overhead were snapping on bend tests. Had us all scratching our heads and doubting our abilities. Shortly after it was determined we could not use the wire for over 1/2" material. Think our failures and others around the country at that time might have shed light on the problem.  We then went to 232 nickel. It passed but looked horrible. We were using non-CV SA200s and Millers.Last edited by kolot; 05-22-2013 at 03:09 PM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:3 1/2-inches is very tight, but it is amazing where you can get a Lincoln K-126 Innershield gun at times. I've even put more bend in the goosenecks before, just use a tubing bender. Reply:Just to add to whats been said already,There are conflicting data sheets out there that state different material thickness limitations for the wire.I dont recall in what lincoln literature i read it in but it was stated that  nr211 needs to mix with the base metal to form a quality weld and thus is limited to three passes.Briggs weldnpower 225/210/cvLn-25 suitcaseMillermatic 130
