should I Mig or Tig? not the most common question

currently i own a lincoln 180c mig welder and also a thermal arc 185 tig welder. i mig weld ppretty good, pretty much any position.. i'm not the best a tig welder, i think i'm better than the average i think, wouldnt swear to it though... i have a little problem with overhead but i believe i could get it, but i dont use my tig enough..because i always grab the mig because its so much faster...  i'm a pure hobby welder, i am currently building a 27 ford roadster, currently i usually mig weld most everything on it because its alot faster and when you prime and paint it, it looks pretty darn good anyways... i also do alot of welding repairs for friends and such, for tips.. I've been contemplating on selling both my lincoln 180c and also my thermal arc 185 and moving to a lincoln precision tig 225..   it has also crossed my mind to sell the 180c and also the ta185 and possibly move back to a larger mig welder and be without a tig, but i like having the versatility of the tig, just to have it in case i need it... i think my tig skills would get alot better and faster if i got rid of the mig and forced myself to use the tig...its such a habit to get the mig out because its so much easier and faster.. what you guys think?Last edited by brucer; 11-25-2010 at 05:07 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:I love the tig but would never want to be completely without a mig, the mig is the go too for big jobs that need to be done quickly & don't need the precision of the tig... you can really kill productivity if you give up the mig completely... what you can do in 1/2 hour might take you 2+ with the tig in some situations...just try to use the tig more.. pick certain jobs that you decide you'll tig instead & use it more...miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....

Reply:I think going from the TA 185 to a PT225 would be a step backwards.  You may gain more in amps but you would be loosing adjustability.  If every now and then you feel that you need to weld some thicker then what the 180c can handle the just put the stinger in the TA 185 and have at it.
