Reply:I haven't priced any steel lately (no shop at the moment) but the one bummer thing is, the only place that sold steel by the foot, quit selling steel and only do scrap now. The only other place to buy steel you have to buy it by the sheet or stick, no cutting. The place that would cut it would be a little higher price, not crazy, but higher than the other place per foot, and they wouldn't charge you for cuts, but you also wouldn't want them making any precision cuts for you. You ask for 6', it's usually 6' 1/8"- 6' 3/4". When I get back into a shop I'm going to break down and invest in a good sized band saw and start advertising steel by the foot, I've got the trailer I can handle a 20-24' stick of steel and I know people around here are hurting for cut steel.
Reply:1"x1"x 24' stick of 14 ga square tube was $25 yesterday including 1 cut to cut it in half.
Reply:I haven't been in the fab business for a number of years, and when I was, I wasn't doing the metal buying. Now I'm getting in to this on my own, and the best place to buy is of great concern to me. The 1/2" plate I mentioned earlier - I calculated the rough weight of that thing, and I paid about $1.14 a pound. That was cut, and the edges cleaned up nicely and loaded in my truck so I don't feel too bad. And the place is close to my work, and the office lady knew a couple of other guys that I know. This seemed to be a good start to a working relationship. She let me take some scrap 1/4" stuff for free to for practice welds. (I need it - it's been awhile as I said.) A nearby weld shop that carries some scrap steel sold me a 3/4" plate 4ftx8in. Odd size but I can find a use for it - I got that for .37 a pound ($30). And this is a big city with lots of little hole in the wall metal yards. Guys at work all have a favorite place that they think is best so I'll have to investigate.Lincoln Square Wave 175
Reply:Hey Macvance, it seems a bit high to me, where are you buying from? I can get you round pieces of 1/2" plate up to about 4' for 30 cents a pound.
Reply:Walker:I went with Tolleson Steel because they're close to my work. Got the scrap at Vern Lewis. What you're describing is round plate? Are these left over from some project? They sound like manhole covers.Lincoln Square Wave 175

I usually just ask that the whole 24' foot stick or sticks I am buying be cut in half (so I can get it back to my shop). I have never been charged for that. This discussion brings to mind a question I've had.Suppose you are manufacturing something and want to cut your local metal monger middleman out of your cost equation. Where does he get the metal from, and what kind of minimum orders are involved? Perhaps he isn't marking up the metal by much, but rather keeping the doors open and lights on with other value added services?"Great spirits have always encountered violent oppostion from mediocre minds." -- Albert Einstein
Reply:next time you're on the road and you see a flatbed loaded with material; pull along side of the cab and see what the name of the co. is.you should not expect much if you're only buying a stick of square tubing. (on a side note if they are charging you for the cut bring an extension cord and a portable band saw with you and cut it yourself).if you are at your local supplier and you see a rig come in loaded with material make a note.if you are in the yard ask one of the employees what company delivers their material. they love to talk.another thing that always surprised me, since in the past i have had to order large amounts of aluminum, is how, for instance, the boat people think that they have to order their aluminum from someone that is affiliated with the marine industry and pay extra for the privilege. now that's a bunch of nonsense, it's all the same. i have put in orders for a few hundred dollars at some large suppliers and for much better pricing than you would get at the local specialty vendors. the 5052 they're selling is no different than the stuff you get somewhere else. there are some big outfits down here that will fill an order for a hundred dollars. just be a business, have a name and credit, they'll talk. even better, frequently they'll deliver. (watch for gas surcharges)about six months ago i needed 20 lengths of 5 x 5 1/4 wall steel tube 50 feet long. i found an outfit in alabama with the material (they could give me a partial and fill in a week). driving down 95 i see a truck with some long pieces of tube. i called the number on the side and got a complete fill on the order and saved 12 cents a pound. keep your eyes open

Reply:There's a BIG scrap metal yard about 20 minutes from here, and I get quite a bit of stuff there. There's metal lying all over the ground as well as several scrap piles the size of a two bedroom house. EVERYTHING. Rods, angles, tubes, pipe, tanks, wire, you name it. 20 cents a pound. A couple of caveats:1. This is probably one of the most dangerous places in the world. There are jagged, 10,000 pound chunks of metal on those piles the size of a pickup truck, just WAITING to come down on you. Not to mention the stuff you can step on. 2. Most of the stuff is extremely dirty, covered with mud, grease, paint, etc. It's also easy to accidentally get a piece of galvanized metal without realizing it (because it's so dirty). You try to run some 6011 on it and end up poisoning yourself with the fumes. THINK about what you're picking up - don't go metal crazy.
Reply:Also call around. i called a few places this morning for the following:1.25x1.25x.065 square tube. HREW24'Price per stick1. $382. $253. $224. $175. $31
