have not posted many pictures of my projects from work but i thought i would put this one  this is by far the largest thing i have ever built! i work for a casino on the las Vegas strip.my boss came to me and asked if i could build a 2 story mock up of the side of a tower on are property using everything off the building(windows and fins) i had some ruff measurements and a sketch of what they wanted(there is no way that what they had in mind would ever work) this is what they wanted had to be mobile, had to be able to fit though a 13 foot door and had to lean forward 4.2* and back 4.2* to match the pitch of the tower... so we through out there plans and made are ownthe start of the base  on wheelsstarting to build the pivots here are the pivots trying to figure where the hole need to be the pins are 1" so i sleeved the square with 1 1/4 dom tubing SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon
Reply:here is the topthis is the top on its pivots we were cycling it for the first time here is me standing next to it for prospective next i started on the window frames 4x4 box and 2x2 angle aluminum sorry dont have any pictures of this process here is a picture with it already started and hydro cylinders mounted SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon
Reply:he next thing was the most time consuming.... making it sturdy!  my favorite picture!SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon
Reply:me again standing next to it for prospective glass getting set glass all in 2,800 pounds of it all done with fins on and and glue dried. i dont have any pictures of it being tested.... but worked perfect took about a month to build  SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon

Reply:I'm confused as to what the purpose of this is? is it just to see what the building will looklike? to test the windows/fins? to spend money that was eating a hole in someone's pocket?Very nice work though. There are no problems. Reply:The purpose is obvious... it is made to fall on a "whale" during a windstorm and then the casino crew will jump out a frisk the fella...   I'm wondering too on the purpose, but sure is a neat welding exercise and well executed.  Gee, ya' got a LOT of shop space there overhead room and plentee of keen forklifts and tools huh? Reply:Haha I guess I should have put that in my post.. The building makes a houl when the wind get over 45 mph... It's going to a wind tunnel for testing..SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon
Reply:so this is as the building exists now, and they are trying to figure out A) if it's actually the fins causing the problem, and B) the cheapest way to fix it. correct? There are no problems. Reply:It looks like a great project to get to work on.  My daughter teaches  at UNLV so we visit there often.  I'm always amazed at stuff you see there and have wondered what kind of support was in the background to keep all the stuff working.

Reply:Sounds funny to me. "We are going to build this huge thing, have it tested, and see if the metal fins we added on the side of the glass building that is like 1000's of other glass buildings are making the noise."  To me it sounds like: "Our ford escort is like every other escort out there but its blue! It could be the blue paint we used, but we are going to perform tests first to make sure its the blue paint making the car look blue."

Reply:Afterwards, after the testing... THEN they'll drop it on a "whale" and get his money... I get it. Still a way fun project.  nice area to work in.   Maybe you can get a few of the showgirls to pose with it? Reply:Nice work!! I knoticed your shelfing systems.  I used to work for Excel Storage Products (United Steel Products).  I was a Foreman there.  I could pick those racks out of a crowd. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:The building is that glass pyramid that gets shown on tv shows and movies every now then right?  If the building is howling from the wind then I can see them wondering if its the shutters at this point and they're looking into whether or not the wind is hitting the shutters causing a harmonic wave to enter into the external structure and resonate through the frame and the glass.  The fix could be even easier than having to remove the shutters and instead try adding a dampener such as polyurethane bushings if there's a hing pin for the shutters or a wedge between the mounting bracket and the window frame if there isn't.  If the shutters serve a purpose of say blocking mid day sunlight then removing them would increase interior heat ( raising cooling costs ) and be annoyingly bright to the guests which makes for an unhappy customer who will go elsewhere to get out of a bright and hot room.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.
Reply:2 million to remove the fins...less than 500k to install transducers and blast the building with opposing frequencies when it's windy- absolute silence. We could go all crazy with it too.. Like with formulas for wind speed, direction, humidity, atm, temperature. Oh boy... And maybe a computer model of the building. I'm drooling just thinking of it.Looks like Las Vegas needs more Engineers. I'll gladly take half of the 2 million and you can keep your noisy fins.Post some pictures or information on this place... I'm curious.Last edited by joefitz; 09-01-2011 at 10:31 PM.I can remember in the 7th grade my mom said "people will offer you drugs" by the 10th grade I was like, "where the hell are these people?"

Reply:So it's been a month - are you allowed to say if the louvers (or whatever to call those windows blinds) were causing the hum?It think you made a very cool machine for this test btw.Miller Syncrowave 180SDLincoln WeldPak 100 with gasHandheld Milwaukee BandsawO/A Cutting Torch
Reply:OMG please tell them they are getting ripped off i am sure i can knock those fins off for a cool million and take them to the local scrap yard ...                      nice build..

Reply:I'm flabbergasted... that someone decided to spend that much money on a scale model of that scale.  Plus time in a wind tunnel big enough to hold it.  Plus apparently shipping it around the country.  And depending on how much your construction varies from the building, it might not even tell them anything. Out of curiosity, did they build a smaller model first?  How much of that $2M did they spend on building and shipping and testing the model? (rhetorical question)   Nice job, though.__David Hillman

Reply:I would say the guys paying to have this built are doing the right thing.I would imagen there are other projects in the works, on the drawing board, or being discussed that use those same fins. Or its the manufacture of the fins having the scale model built. When they were bid 2mil to take the fins off. Your damn right they started cracking the whip on the engineers to make sure they don't blow 2mil for nothing. And atleast with that huge scale model. They can test other fin designs.Great work BTW..Last edited by FunnyDream; 10-16-2011 at 02:35 AM.ThermalArc 161STL TIG/Stick (160amp)Lincoln weld-pak 100 (fluxcore)4X6 Enco bandsaw10" skillsaw with metal blade for 45degrees (works)4" grinderWeld for fun.
