I'm practicing for the UA33 inconel test right now. I have limited experience with this material. Its going fairly well but I was wondering a few things about it. Why does inconel have an inordanant affinity towards the tung? Ni content? What does this stuff weigh and cost per pound?

Reply:Inconel and other predomiantly Nickle alloys weigh about 8% more than stainless steel. If a piece of stainless of a given size weighs 16 oz. than an inconel piece of the same size would weigh 17 1/4 oz. this is a rough comparison, not to be used for engineering purposes. It has been my experience inthe Greater cincinnati area, that solid Inconel filler metals (GTAW, GMAW and SAW) costs between 3-4 times the cost of 308 filler metals of the same size. It has also been my experience that good stainless and carbon steel welders will tend to try to flatten out the bead by increasing the heat. I suggest you cut your heat by 10% of what you would use on stainless or carbon. I also advise welders to strive for a slightly crowned bead. Go to specialmetalswelding.com. |
