I have to pick up a tank of 75/25 argon, oxy on my way to work tonight. It will be laying on its side in my truck overnight in freezing whether. I dont know if argon turns liquid or stays gas so my question is, will it freeze? TIA
Reply:Well... Ive never heard this one before.Yes, it will freeze. Some where around -78.5°C and -189.2°C (the freezing points of the CO2 and argon, respectively)I dont think its going to get that cold outside, so you should be ok.Last edited by sn0border88; 12-01-2010 at 02:58 PM.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:btw, for those who think in Fahrenheit, the boiling point of argon is -302.53 F and the melting point is -308.83 F.brrrrrrrrrr. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:...and that would be at atmospheric pressure.Under pressure in a tank it would be much different.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:I don't think you need to worry about your tanks exploding. As I understand it most liquids take up less space when frozen. Water being the exception which is why a can of soda explodes in the freezer.
Reply:I think if you get a full cylinder of CO2 down below ~70 F it will be liquid.

Reply:Hey wireburner,You need to clarify if you are getting one bottle of C25(75AR/25CO2) & one bottle of O2, or just one bottle of either...... seems to be a bit of confusion. Either way, they won't be affected by the weather.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:I've stored and used them down to about -65 F. Not an issue.

Reply:Okay, before the banter gets too far off track...There is nothing to worry about with cylinders outside in extremely cold weather. You can even USE them in that weather.C25 will remain a full gas at every conceivable operating temperature you will ever encounter. |
